No a Shakhtar loss and a Chelsea win would mean that they would have the same amount of points. Since they split their games, it comes down to goal differential. With the current scoreline, Chelsea advances.

A draw or an away win in the Shakhtar Donetsk and Juventus game in Ukraine will put both into the last 16 of the Champions League and dump Chelsea into the Europa League.

If thats serious there are going to be a lot of questions about why Messi was played in this game.

We all know why, its to pad his stats. That and the fact that Barca dont win when Messi doesnt play.

I see the Daily Mail saying that, but I dont understand why.

As of right now as I understand the group looks like this:

Juventus - 12 points +8
Chelsea - 10 Points +6
Shakhtar - 10 points +4
FC Nord - 1 Point -18

Is there an away goals rule or what am I totally forgetting?

If two or more teams are equal on points on completion of the group matches, the following criteria are applied to determine the rankings:

higher number of points obtained in the group matches played among the teams in question;
superior goal difference from the group matches played among the teams in question;
higher number of goals scored in the group matches played among the teams in question;
higher number of goals scored away from home in the group matches played among the teams in question;
If, after applying criteria 1) to 4) to several teams, two teams still have an equal ranking, criteria 1) to 4) are reapplied exclusively to the matches between the two teams in question to determine their final rankings. If this procedure does not lead to a decision, criteria 6) to 8) apply;
superior goal difference from all group matches played;
higher number of goals scored from all group matches played;
higher number of coefficient points accumulated by the club in question, as well as its association, over the previous five seasons.

from the wikipedia article:

Quote:

3)higher number of goals scored in the group matches played among the teams in question;

So Chelsea goes through based on criteria #2

so it's the 4th one for Shakhtar, away goals

same amount of points (3 each)
same goal difference (both won by 1 goal)
same goals scored (see above)
Shaktar scored 2 at Chelsea, Chelsea got 1 at Shakhtar

The only thing you got right here is that Messi was in fact played to pad his stats...stupid decision on Vilanova's part. But as for Barca not winning without Messi, perhaps you didn't notice that they fielded 8 of their 2nd team players. Not bad to draw with Benfica's 1st team.

Bad move on Vilanova there, the next league game has more importance than this CL game

yes away goals WITHIN the 2 games between Shaktar and Chelsea.

Treat it as a first and 2nd leg.

1st leg: Donesk won 2-1 in Ukraine
2nd leg: Chelsea won 3-2 in London

Donesk advance on away goals.

I knew it. Its always a wonky away goals rule.

I apologize, I was wrong.
