Well not too hard to understand. Negative whining is A LOT more annoying to read over and over again vs. guarded optimism. Nobody is saying this is a guaranteed good move. Most are advising a wait and see rather than constantly getting panties in a bunch.

I guess the question becomes if you're going to go so far off the board why not go even further and try for more pics? It's easy to play armchair GM but this pick seems so far out of left field it's hard to imagine you couldn't have him in the 30's

That's a perfectly valid argument, IMO, and one that shouldn't be brushed over in favor of the baseless positivity that apparently constitutes good discussion.

I don't mind a healthy debate about the decision, but there are some posters who haven't seen the player, or even heard of him, yet are writing it off.
I will always have more patience for positivity than negativity. I think it is a healthier way to approach things.
When the same people whine all the time - it gets tiresome.

They did but, perhaps the other teams were expecting he would go second round because of where he played. There would be 2 rankings at play: Where a team thought he ranked and where a team believed he would be picked.

I'm attacking the people who are over the top.
There are plenty who have shown cautious optimism on the pick. There are plenty who are disappointed we didn't get someone else. Both are valid, reasonable opinions.
The over the top hyperbole deserves to be called out.
And yes, I gave my opinion. I am intrigued. And given I am not a pessimist by nature, I am hopeful that the Flames pulled off a coup here. For one thing, it is much healthier than assuming failure.
And say what you will about his CSB ranking, it seems logical that the Flames chose him at 21 because they did not believe he would be available at 42. They got the guy they wanted, and they got a second round selection back. That is a positive first day of the draft.

Those players can all still be list line centers and good hockey players. According to the draft boards, Button, the TSN Panel and the people who actually follow and watch these kids, he has the chance to be one of the top players in this entire draft class. I choose to listen to them when the say things like this, when they call him a project player with a high risk and high reward. Those players mentioned have a much higher probability of making an impact, and a strong one at that. This kid sounds like he has the potential to go above and beyond that.
Again, I'm going with what I've read. I know nothing about these players, and I assume neither do you.
|
I know now about as much as a fan can from reading various sources on the internet about them and not scouting them full time but you are certainly right I have never seen him or most guys outside of the WHL more than a handful of time on TV.
Just don't see Jankowski having more (doesn't mean he has less) upside/high reward than Gaunce, Maata, Tervanainen etc.

I've read a lot about this draft heading into it - and it wasn't as far off the board as some are making it out to be. There were numerous places where it was speculated he could go in the first. It would have taken just one other team to like the kids upside.
I don't think he would have lasted until 42.

What ever happened to sticking to the board and picking "the best player available"
Messing around with a first round pick is really dumb.
The Flames could have selected Maatta, and this gamble Jankowski in the 2nd.
This odd decision making has me p##### right off.

Ummm the Flames board doesn't necessarily match NHL Central Scouting/ ISS / or TSN's draft board?

Just from reading various internet reports... it seems like this guy was THE sleeper in the first round. Everything i've read so far seems to indicate that somebody was going to take this guy in the late 20's. If these guys were that sold on this player... they were going to have to take him at 21.
Who knows if those internet reports were completely accurate... but that's the sentiment i've seen thus far. Then again, i've never seen the player and have no real insight into NHL drafting.

Totally guessing here, but considering Jankowski's coach talking about the 25 NHL scouts per game, maybe the Flames realized this kid was a diamond in the rough and could likely go well before his early 40ish ranking?
Edit: And after reading Flames1987's post, is appears this was indeed the case.

I'm not going to rush to judge the kid because, like you, I have no clue what he is about. But the Flames do, and that is worth giving him a chance. How about we reconvene in the future when we've had a chance to watch and judge him ourselves? Or do you just prefer to jump to conclusions based in ignorance?
|
Who's crying? All I see is a pitiful poster personally attacking people because of what I can assume are deep seeded personal issues.
I don't like the pick and have justified why. What have you done to add to the discussion besides showing how little you actually know when you stoop to the insults.

I think this is a great point. Based on his age I think this topic will be re-visited next year at the draft. I'm interested to see what one more year of development at a higher level of competition will reveal. My fingers are crossed and I feel oddly optimistic about this pick for some reason

I still don't get taking him in the first round. The flames could use a guy like maatta or ceci desperately.
