I'm not surprised. It works very well in American politics.

Oh ok, didn't know that. Makes sense. Always enjoyed the scrutineers when I was working at the polls for Election Canada.
That is to say, they mostly got on my nerves. But I do understand how they are very important. However with our system I think they're purpose is more about getting info back to their party than actually keeping the process transparent and fair.

It's very close, but it's starting to look like Raj Sherman will narrowly lose in Edmonton-Meadowlark. It raises an interesting question: what becomes of the Liberals? They're left with 3 members, 2 from Calgary and 1 from Edmonton.
The two from Calgary are pretty different from one another, both personally and ideologically... Can they form a functional and effective caucus? What CAN they achieve, without crossing the floor and joining a bigger-tent party?

I saw plenty of fear mongering from both the WR and the PCs. It just all depends on what you're afraid of.

Unless the left unites and picks up real momentum, I think it'll be the WR to defeat the Conservatives.

It's easy to point at two Wildrose candidates to say hey look they are social conservatives! Even though the PCs have religious anti-gay candidates that avoided the media scrutiny.
The PCs said boo, watch out for the scary Wildrose, and the voters/media ate it up.
It will be up to Wildrose to prove them wrong, and I believe they will.

Well the fear, at least on my part, came from the platform and actions of the WRP, not from the PC's telling me to be afraid of them.
I don't need any campaign to tell me how to feel, I can do that on my own. The more you stick to the issues the better.
But I do guess it works on some people.

Wildrose is basically a rural rump party after tonight...although the race in my riding might mean my MLA is one. They're separated by 59 votes at this point, which is unbelievable.

Was thinking the PCs would win but surprised at the margin.
Thought the Wildrose would do better than the Liberals did in 92. I think unless they purge some of the social extremists this is pretty much their high water mark though.

This is hugely disappointing for the Wild Rose Party. They couldn't beat a arrogant corrupt tired party run by a leader who ran a absolutely terrible campaign was awful in the debate and ran on a campaign of fear and hidden agenda accusations.
WildRose needs to seriously go back and rethink some parts of their platforms and sit back and watch the PC's spend this province into a deeper hole.
At the end of the day I had hoped that the voters would punish the PC's, but instead they decided to reward a trainwreck leader and party out of sheer I'm assuming laziness, and obviously while the voters talked a good game about wanting change and a new energy, wanted nothing but the same old same old.
They've basically handed the Conservatives and a free spending Allison Redman a cheque book and no mechanism to stop her.
We're about to get just what we deserve.

If, as WRP supporters pointed out repeatedly during the election, you can only judge someone on what they have done in the past, why would you think that the WRP would change given what the province saw as a silent approval from Danielle Smith?
I agree that they should, but what makes you think they will (or are able to)

The cities demographics are only going to get more progressive. This might have been the best chance the Wildrose will have.

A big thing for the WR will be getting experience in their MLAs. I think this is ultimately the best result for the WR...they are given a chance to learn how to act professionally and to represent their constituents well. If the party ends up being the heir, then it's best to ease them in.
