The problem I keep running into is how many options you have to get to downtown:
- Public transit? Nope, not from Airdrie.
- More than one viable route in the event of an accident or congestion on the main highway? Nope, not from Airdrie.
If all I did was drive and had no problems about being on the road potentially for a long period of time, Airdrie would be okay for me... except for the social suicide thing, that'd kinda suck too.

Actually, there is an intercity express bus service between Airdrie and downtown Calgary: http://www.calgarytransit.com/html/airdrie_service.html
But the lack of routes is frustrating. Not just between Calgary and Airdrie, but in north Calgary itself. Seems that if Deerfoot is broken, you have to go well out of your way to get anywhere.
I'd definitely stick to south Calgary instead.

I want to hear more about the garage doors being half open in Airdrie. Anyone care to elaborate.

I live in North Calgary and I don't find it that bad if Deerfoot is a mess. 52nd, 36th, Barlow Trail, Edmonton Trail, Centre, 14th... they all move relatively quickly. At least, faster than Deerfoot might if there's an accident.
The intercity is interesting but only two trips in the morning and two in the afternoon means that if you miss the late one, you're screwed.

As busy as Deerfoot is during rush hour and stop and go traffic, it's still way better than say a Macleod Trail, a Crowfoot Trail, or 14th St. during rush hour, simply because there are no traffic lights and there are no people trying to turn left. I find these two items make rush hour traffic exponentially worse.

I know this is an older post and it might have been pointed out already, but travel to basically ANY country in the world and you will see signs/products in plain English when the native language is anything but.
Some people have such a double standard for things.

Every time I come back to this thread I hear Subdivisions by RUSH
Spawling on the fringes of the city
In geometric order, an insulated border
In between the bright lights
And the far unlit unknown

LOL, every time I come to this thread, I wonder why no one has mentioned that Airdrie has the coolest DJ who plays at a certain Irish pub Saturday nights and will play songs like this...

Langdon is awesome. 2nd school opening here in the fall.
Kids can walk to school from K through 9 currently. High School land has already been set aside but is probably a few years from being built.
Great access to the city via glenmore, hwy1 or 22x depending what part of the city you are headed to.
Lots are truly significantly bigger than the city cookie cutter lots in Airdrie.

Small town high schools are what keep AADAC in business.

So traffic this morning would probably be a good argument to not living in Airdrie, as two separate accidents on Deerfoot south basically had traffic at a standstill and backed up to near Balzac.

^Yes, but on the other hand, my 10 minute bike commute which has about 300m of road total, almost ended with me being smoked by a taxi.... it's not all lattes and cheap cab rides...

My mom lives in Airdrie and works right off Deerfoot on McKnight Blvd.
She left her house at 8:55 this morning and at 10:12 when I called her, was still not in her desk yet.

By my math, that's about 20 minutes.

Out of curiosity, what were actual times experienced by our Airdrie citizens this morning? (going to the core or otherwise)

A lot of Airdrie people I meet are convinced that their commutes are quicker than mine downtown, yet I live in Harvest Hills. This is simply impossible, but people always lie to themselves about their commutes.

I live by Westhills. It took me about 25 minutes to drive to the Connaught area where I park, and then another 10 minutes to take the #2 to my office on the West side of downtown.

I left my house (Sage Hill) at 8:15 and got to work (Mcknight and Deerfoot) at 9:15. I thought I'd be smart and try going Stoney Trail to Shaganappi to John Laurie and then to Mcknight. I'm guessing if I had taken Deerfoot it would have been around the same time?

28 minutes Woodbine to 16th/Edmonton Tr. Mind you, I left at 6 and Deerfoot was very skate-able...
