Doesn't a Slingbox have a custom setting, that lets you tweak the code until it is found?

I dont know,
From what I read online they dont support the Arris GAteway box. I'm thinking I'm just going to set up my old box as an extra and try that tonight.

Is there a good time to call to book an appointment to hook the Gateway up? I had assumed that I could activate it online but that seems not to be the case. I've been on hold with 2 departments for an hour now.
Can I go to one of the retail locations to book an appointment?

http://www.shaw.ca/NEWYEARSSALE/
found this on the website today; looks like free gateway and other stuff but only in person, over 2 days, at a shaw office. not online nor over the phone.
as an existing shaw customer, of course these are not available to me.

Actually, they will honour the deal for existing customers. I just went this morning and got a Gateway and 2 portals for $200 (Gateway +1 portal for $148, and extra portal for $48).
They are installing it today (supposedly).

I'm trying to sign up for shaw friends but it needs an accoutn number which I don't have. I've been on hold for 2 hours. I went to deerfoot shaw and they just told me to call in. Why can't they hook me up? She couldn't even access any plans to show me anything. Useless. I thought Telus was bad...

Site says that's for a six month rental of gateway and two portals. Unless I'm not reading it right.

that is an awesome deal dude! not quite sure how they let you have that...but the fine print is quite specific about new customers. you must have gotten a great CSR!
still...the deal that you got isn't the deal on the 2 day sale page...although i would be ecstatic to get that deal myself.
let's see how hungover i am tomorrow before i try to think about shaw actually being opened on sunday, jan 1.
if i can get your deal...man. sweet!

I got the same deal, same price except with 3 portals! I was pretty freakin happy about that. Mind you, I had to switch over my home phone to them to get the 3rd portal thrown in but that's fine as I intended to do that some point down the road anyways. And I've been with Shaw for close to 10 yrs now so they are throwing exisiting customers a bone too.
CSR said Shaw would be phoning within a day or two to schedule an appt that could be anytime within the next 3 weeks. That kinda bums me out but works out well in the same breath as I need to move TV's around anyways.
They haven't phoned yet though, that makes me a little concerned. I'm sure they are busy but phone me! I wanna get the ball rolling on this ASAP.

is there any way to power the gear down or does it stay on all of the time?
thanks!

On all the time, at least they are on all the time with my set-up.
The gateway has no perceivable temp in an open area, case is same as ambient temp. I have one portal in an semi-enclosed area, it is slightly warm to the touch. 2 other portals in open areas are ambient temp as well.

The Gateway is fairly noisy. The portals are very quiet.

We have had the gateway for about 2 months now. So far it is OK but buggy.
1. Portals lose connection to the gateway sometimes brefly and then sometimes require a reboot. Likely our biggest complaint.
2. Some delay when changing channels - nothing major and we had this with the old PVR's
3. Love the central PVR, that is awesome.
4. I found that if you have to reboot (see #1) then it is best to reboot the entire system. Unplug all portals and gateway. Restart gateway and wait for all the lights to show up. Then restart the portals.
5. My wife likes to sleep with the TV on (not sure why) so the 3 hour timeout acts like a sleep timer for her. I like that.
6. Support wait times for the gateway suck ass but I have only had to call them once. I wanted to move the gateway from our bedroom to the basement so I want to ask if I could that or needed a service call. Other than that no other calls have been needed.
I would recommend the system to anyone. Hopefully they keep working on the bugs.

I finally got a service appointment booked. Does anyone know what I need to have it hooked up? I'm assuming just a coax connection to where the portals are going, but I noticed there's a boatload of ethernet ports on the rear panel as well. Do I need ethernet running to the gateway as well?
TIA.

Coax is all you need I belevie. Shaw will supply all the "stuff" needed.
You can move it but there is a filter (looks like a splinter) that needs to move too. I moved the gateway with the filer to the basement where I had another portal with no problems. If you wanted the gateway, say in a utility room with no portal then I am not sure how to do it. The filter is the important part I guess.

Mines getting installed on Sunday between 10AM and noon (which will likely mean sometime around 8PM) and I'm super pumped! Also bought a new Panasonic Plasma so I can finally replace the old CRT we had in the living room AND have it connected to the Gateway. I can't belive after wanting a system like this for so long that it's acutally being installed this weekend. I've prepped the significant other about potential growing pains so hopefullly it's a smooth transition.
My only concern at this point is the Gateway being noisy. How noisy are we talking? Like running Xbox 360 noisy?
I'll likely need a new cabinet for where the Gateway is going anyways so hopefully I can find something with doors so I can try to muffle it some.
