To all those reading this board who live in the area of Chiba, Tokyo, Kanagawa, Saitama, Ibaraki prefectures or close to. My wife's friend just sent her a text message. Her friends father works for the oil company in Chiba who's refinery on Tokyo Bay has had a major fire from the earthquake. She said there have been dangerous chemicals released from the blaze and they also worry about radiation leaking from the Fukushima power plant. They are strongly suggesting you limit the amount of time spent outdoors. Don't go out more than you have to, don't hang your laundry outside to dry etc. Also she stressed that the next time it rains there is a good chance it could be toxic. DO NOT go out when it's raining, especially the first rain after the fact. Apparently this warning has only been issued in Chiba so far, and it may not be released elsewhere to avoid mass panic. However this message seemed very urgent, so just giving you a heads up if you live in the area. We were told by her to take this very seriously, probably for at least the next month, and we live in Kanagawa. Please be careful and be safe everyone.

Sorry, not trying to start any panic. The source is a high school classmate of my wife's, and her father works for the company and was told this by them directly. Whether you believe it or not and how much precaution you take is up to you. Not trying to piss anyone off or make them panic, honestly. I'm not even sure myself to what extent caution needs to be taken or how long it would last, but just thought it would be good to err on the side of caution. Some like me may not have heard this before either. I appologize if I worded it poorly and you're right, panicking is the last thing people need to do right now. I hope you're right and its nothing.

Thanks for the info Fanman we got a very similar heads up but it was focused on nuclear fallout.
The lack of proactive information from the authorities, the heightened stress levels and lack of sleep is causing a lot of emails to be circulated.
I wanted to thank both you and Thecomodoreafro for the reports and updates. Also, thanks to the previous posters for the nuclear discussion.
Hopefully the Fukushima reactor can be contained and we wont have to watch the prevailing winds to see where a cloud is going or not going.
Just in case - The winds usually blow southwest to northeast across the Kanto area.
Just had another tremor - I'm getting quite tired of having to decide if the strength of tremor requires a stand-up/get ready or don't worry response.

Should be an interesting night. Not sure if I should sleep in my street clothes but thus far the part of Yokohama I'm in seems to have escaped relatively unscathed (that and we just build this place last year, so it's up to earthquake code).
It seems the nuclear thing has passed, and though there was a lot of smoke, there's very little chance the fire in Chiba and Odaiba caused anything toxic to linger in the atmosphere. I'm the first to jump on these things as I'm trying to be careful myself on what's happening. Panic situations are starting - all gas stands in my neighbourhood are sold out is a big sign, and this friend of a friend stuff is a little too close to the "blame the Koreans" reaction during the Great Kanto earthquake for me.

Aren't the Japanese developing those safe micro-reactors anyways? Japan is really eco concious for the most part. Maybe we'll see a push for something like that instead of the bigger reactors?

Agreed, but it isn't like anti-nuclear activists are above using ignorance and fear to spread panic against the idea. Guarantee you that the next time it comes up, someone will fire back with "what happened in Japan could happen here too", regardless of the facts surrounding Japan's incident.
