I was in the Philippines for the 2013 storm. Man was that crazy. Never again. Seeing the destruction afterwards was absolutely insane, as there was no escaping it.

Nobody who's seriously working on these issues disputes this.
But you ask, how is this possible to reduce GHG emissions while increasing NG consumption in India by 200 bcm? Because places like Europe and North America decrease their natural gas consumption by 500 bcm collectively.

Not directly. I was posing these as general questions that I believe would serve us all better to consider compared to the typical sorts of fruitless exchanges I am routinely witness to. Because you're experienced and educated in this arena, and you've got ideas on how to answer them, they resonated with you. Thanks for the response.
My response would be whether your modelling work and proposal cover electricity generation, transportation, building heat and power AND industrial process heat requirements or not.
What I mean by biophysical reality is looking very deeply at the energy return on investment we are earning with our systems, and choosing wisely. Hall and Klitgaard expand on Energy and the Wealth of Nations. I'm actually scheduled to interview Hall on this very subject within a few weeks... exciting for me!

Sickening news out of Barbuda.
As an aside, there are major forest fires across the western US and Canada. In the US there are 81 fires burning 1.5 million acres. Fires in Montana, Oregon, Washington St. Idaho, California, Colorado, Utah, Wyoming.
Here in Vancouver the city is drapped in smoke, the north shore mountains are not visible.
Here's a map of fires in the PNW

This isn't the forest fire thread. Please start a thread on forest fires if you want to discuss them.

wow... that's the last thing the US needs.
Hopefully everyone will take the evacuations seriously and leave if they are able too.

There's a bunch of different measures of "powerful". Most intense (lowest pressure) remains Wilma. Highest sustained wind remains Allen. Longest duration of sustained winds over 185 mph is a metric that was made up today, and Irma wins that.

Yeah, I've been through ... ten? A dozen? Since I arrived in Taiwan in 2011. I always expect at least one if not three or four days off a year due to typhoons. However, Taipei is probably the best place in the world to be if you want to experience a typhoon with relatively low risk.
The country itself is extremely well prepared for these storms: http://www.atlasobscura.com/articles...super-typhoons as we get 3-4 a year on average. Also, the mountain range that runs the length of the middle of the country is more-or-less the same height as the Alberta rockies, we've got something like 260 peaks over 3,000 meters and since the storms come in from the south and east and move to the north and west, Taipei in the northwestern corner of the island is pretty well protected.
There is still damage and there are often deaths and injuries, though they are usually in the mountains and frequently the result of landslides or mudslides. All that said, were I pretty much anywhere else in the world other than Taipei - in particular a low-lying, extremely flat location like Florida, I would GTFO if there was one of these storms bearing down. The amount of rain and the wind they deliver is just astronomical.

Scheduled to work in the DR in a few weeks. Hopefully this craziness passes over without leveling the country.

I talked to a couple who have a flight to Dulles out of Ft Lauderdale for 6 am Saturday. They got the last two tickets.
I was surprised the airlines were planning flights.
We've been working 12-13 hours a day because people are calling in sick.
I still need to find gas somewhere.
Good thing I have impact Windows, but my neighbors are giving me the stink eye as I haven't moved my patio stuff in yet.

A quick update for those that care:
-We are at the hospital now
-Wife is in labour, but it's early
-We will probably have a baby by the end of the day
The only question is whether or not we would be released from the hospital before the storm hits. Not sure which I would rather at the moment.

That's gotta be frustrating. How do you even answer that? "Oh weird, seems like everyone is getting sick right before the hurricane. What a coincidence!"
