I get locking up 24 year old but this was their shot and now they will just be pretty good longer but not as good ever. Its like if the Avs made a major move after losing in the 2nd round with an unreal team. Playoffs are crazy, the line is so fine. Panthers will be good, highly doubt they are anywhere near last seasons point totals.
That division is no joke
|
Me neither, the Flames had an unreal year this past season and he didn't do much in the playoff. Someone will goad him into unnecessary fight again in the playoff and he will fall for it again. Unless he just grew up over night.

I'm over all the interviews...I loved Calgary so much, fans are so great...but I wouldn't play hockey there for millions of dollars
guy obviously didn't love it that much, thanks for the massive return...I can't be mad because I would have done the deal if you wanted to stay

If they're good this year they're going to look to add at the deadline but won't have the picks to do it.
So they move their own rentals now when they're on sweetheart deals? Why not move other lesser assets with sweeteners and keep both players? Especially Weegar as his exit makes their blueline pretty tepid.
Just don't get why they didn't cash in on their own good fortune to have two upper roster players on expiring sweetheart deals when they're supposed to be all in on winning now.
Head scratching.

I can only attribute it to Zito being disappointed by their playoff performances in getting swept by Tampa. He didn't think he could win it all with those players.
Not that Tkachuk was much better in the playoffs, other than the Game 1 hatty in a blowout win over the Oilers.

With you dino7c. Starting to feel like pure PR, though at least it occurred to him to pay lip service to Calgary, unlike Gaudreau who only got around to it after the predictable as heck backlash he should of seen coming.
I don't think it's completely hollow sentiments coming from Tkachuk either but these comments seem driven in part to preserve his image, and funnily not as heartfelt as Gaudreau's who you would of thought would realize leaving without so much as a thank you would be seen as a spurning by us.

Funny because I actually think Tkachuk is less sincere then Gaudreau. Tkachuk is just polished. I kinda view Tkachuk like a politician in this regard. Gaudreau a deer in the headlights.

Small market Western Canada vs Miami suburbs. People need to get their head out of the snow here and understand Calgary is a bottom tier market in the league. People have said Treliving is a mediocre GM however I think he is a good GM in a mediocre market.
I would have preferred the Flames signed Tkachuk and he would have become the captain and one of the all time greats but he did go about this in a way that allowed the Flames to get an absolutely massive return so like you said it is hard to be mad as a fan.
End of the day it is just really not that surprising our 2 American drafted superstars decided to leave after their second contracts. Many assumed it would be the case and it was. It doesn’t help our small market team has the worst facility in the league to play out of.
I also see Tkachuk left to a market where there have been little to no pandemic restrictions throughout the past 2.5 years.

That's exactly what I tried to express. You put it more succinctly than I did. I agree!
Edit: while graceless it seems fairly clear johnny had more skin in the game, so it's all the more baffling he couldn't bring himself to make a cogent statement in the immediate aftermath of his signing with Columbus or even appreciate how his lack of statement would be perceived negatively. Never thought he was malicious, just shockingly clueless. Stunned me when I learned he has a communications degree.

It helps if you accept that 98 per cent of interviews of professional athletes are meaningless, insincere fluff that they’ve been coached to say by their agents. If a moratorium were imposed on player interviews by the NHLPA - not a word said to the media by any players - it wouldn’t affect my enjoyment of the NHL one bit.

and 3 million cap hit.... do we really want him? I might say "yes" if we believe that his progress has been slowed due to the Oiler's bad development system, two years ago, or even last year at this time, I would be all in on that, it's just this 3 million that has me pressing the pause button, now if we could get Edmonton to retain 750K like they did with Neal... do it.

They gave up too much to get him, zero doubt. And Tkachuk may never score this many points again.
But one thing about Tkachuk, I do think he eventually figures out the playoffs. Unlike Gaudreau, his game should translate. I do believe that and if you're a good team that can't get over the hump in the playoffs, seems like a reasonable bet to make. He replaces Huberdeau and in their minds, will be better than him in the playoffs. So question is whether they can replace the blueliner.

If this is your view though then you shouldn't be upset if a player leaves and makes their own decisions. Loyalty goes both ways and a lot of people who don't like Monahan also hate on Tkachuk and Gaudreau for leaving.

Not me. He has some skill and measurables but I'm not sure he's the type of player that's ever going to get it. I suppose Sutter could be one of the few coaches that could set him straight but I wouldn't be giving up any assets the other way outside of a late round draft pick or middling AHL player.

You go back to Tkachuk’s comments when Matthews signed his 5 year deal and he was quick to compliment that term. When he signed his 3 year bridge it was all about “keeping the team together” clearly it was all about getting out of Calgary in 4 years. He was ready to sign the QO and play out his last year here but they were able to come to an agreement to trade him now which worked for both parties.
I agree Chucky comes across as a politician and is calculated in what he says to the media. I believe he enjoyed his time here but was never planning to be a career Flame. Luckily he is a rare breed of player that was able to garner a massive return in a trade that allowed the Flames to retool and stay competitive.
The breakup with Chucky was something that I think many saw coming even when he said he absolutely wanted to stay here long term. Gaudreau does come across as more sincere so he turned believers out of many of us when he said he wanted to stay even Eric Francis. So when he left it stung more especially since the team got nothing for him and offered him $15M more than the team who got him did.
I think it is probably 80-20 that Chucky gets a really warm reception when he comes back to the dome next year but I think it is 90% chance Johnny hears the boos. I do think he will get an ovation during the tribute video but will hear it every time he touches the puck. Chucky is going to have to do something dirty to one of our players to get the same response.

His time in Edmonton reminds me a bit of Sam Bennett.
Drives play (transition)
Has good chance metrics.
His goal splits are even decent.
But when the scoresheet gets written up he's not the guy getting the goal or the assist generally.
Effective as hell at transitioning, but not the guy to make that final play.
Bennett has alleviated that somewhat in Florida, will Puljujarvi?

I'm imaging something along these lines for Gaudreau.
"GO HOME JOHNNY! O-HI-O!"
