Selling off future pieces for rentals would run counter to everything Conroy has said. I read it more that they would be open to a hockey trade, where they get a piece like a #2 centre, but one that still is part of the future.
This part is the most revealing: Not news that the Flames are looking for a 2nd line center that is age appropriate and play with the Flames for 3 to 5 years at least

Right now he isn't.
I think the best route is to try and get him going. He was a big part of turning around the PP late last season. Not sure why it's not working this year.
I don't think Pelletier is going to unlock the PP.

Nah, his value was iffy even if he was scoring like he did in his first year on the Canucks. I think with his play so far this year that is out the window even if he goes on a heater

If Rantenan hit free agency and the flames just made playoffs would we consider going big after him?
We have the cap space and the need.
He just turned 28, can play center and has multiple 100 ppint seasons.
I'd think about it. Especially if you could dump Kadri.

Flames will move picks/prospects for a long term solution. But not a rental.

Chatter in Vancouver is that the ask was willander + for Jiricek. They wanted an RD and a player now.
So would you give up Bruz plus a significant roster player for Jirecek?

Off topic now as well, but about ten years ago, Brian Burke once wrote me a handwritten four-page letter about careers in sports and what they required, and how to get to the top. I had only met him for five minutes at the Chamber, he told me to give him my business card, and then I received one of the coolest personalized letters in my life in the mail literally the next week. I leveraged that letter and the advice in it to successfully get into a business grad school at that time. Dude is an A+ human.

1000%.
I think any player not named Zary, Coronato, Rasmus, Weegar, Wolf should be in that offer

Nobody predicted Huberdeau would be come a 50 point forward, there was no precident for that type of decline (hence it being the biggest single season drop ever).
With hindsight it's easy to say they should have taken another package, or taken that package, kept the 1st and re-signed Weegar and tried to flip Huberdeau before the season started.
But at the time it was like "We found our Gaudreau replacement and added a top 4 d-man with a 1st round pick attached"
|
The whole outcome supposedly was "Flames traded Gaudreau/Tkachuk/Monahan/1st for Huberdeau/Kadri/Weegar/1st.

Between the tax advantages and market attractiveness, I think it’s a bit idealistic to suggest Calgary can conduct their business like either Dallas or Vegas. It’s an unfair reality being in a Canadian market. If we’re modelling after anyone I’d hope it’s Carolina.

Lol how do you read that as sellers.
If they are in the mix, they could be bigger players.
Sounds like the organization just can't help themselves.

This is the exact method the Flames have been using for years. Just say no to locking anyone up long term who is approaching their 30s or in their 30s. Maybe you can do that once you're a player away from something, but this is not the path to take for a team that desperately needs this rebuild to work out well.

We don't have the need for a 28 year old free agent.
Nothing has happened yet so I won't overreact but hearing they could be players at the trade deadline if they are in the playoff spot who knows what happens.

It's how you assign two separated phrases.
Quote:
"He (Conroy) could get aggressive, it all depends on if Calgary can hang in the mix... Conroy and the Calgary Flames could be a bigger player than anticipated on that March 7th trade deadline"
|
I get that it's 100% interpretive but I took that to mean it all depends on if they stay in the mix, and if they don't they could be bigger players.

Are sellers usually called aggressive? Or buyers are the aggressive ones making the moves.
Thats how I look at it.
Just use the Tkachuk trade as an example. Zito traded 2 big pieces from his team to get another big piece.

It's not even December. I don't see a point in over-analyzing one line in an Insider Trading segment. Conroy has a good read on the team so far. I'm going to just wait to see what happens.
