That indeed is a dumb trade proposition. The Flames have a quality and quantity problem. This years draft, having similar talent around where they're drafting doesn't help to trade up. Especially giving up another 1st to a team in Montreal which likely wants to accumulate more veteran help than draft capital. What happens when you have internet bloggers writing articles.

It was written by Corey Pronman.

Trading a 1st just to move up a few spots in a draft like this seems completely unnecessary, even if you're locked on to a player that you think another team will take. Maybe the value works out in a less up-in-the-air draft, but I think having more picks is the way to go unless you are getting someone like Demidov.

And let's just stop giving Montreal 1st round picks.

No, it was put together by Pronman from all the team writers.

Flames fans really want Tij Iginla at ninth overall. But there was a golden opportunity to trade into the top five with the Canadiens and come away with an impact defenseman in Buium, who could translate into a game-breaker (and a future No. 1 D-man) that Calgary desperately needs. Buium found himself in the top-10 in scoring among NCAA players as a freshman defenseman and in the top-20 in average points per game. The high-end skill set that makes him effective in all phases of the game should help soften the blow of not drafting their franchise icon’s offspring. — Julian McKenzie

If that trade proposal and subsequent draft moves happened this fanbase would riot Canucks style. Imagine trading away Tij Iginla and our additional first to pick a guy who likely would be there at 9 anyway?

Hard to say. Everyone probably had the D in a different ranking.

No point trading up just because.

I'd love to see Conroy make a move for NJ's #10 pick so the Flames can grab 2 players. I know the talk was that NJ was willing to move next year's 1st, but maybe a less complicated trade involving Markstrom and the #10 is possible.

If the Flames could snag a forward from the Helenius/Iginla/Catton group and a Dman from the Parekh/Buium/Yakemchuk group? That'd be swell.

The outrage if we take Iginla and Hitmen player. I love it.

If he figures out the NHL the same way he's figured out every other level on the way up, he could be a difference maker.
I think Wolf counts as a strong core piece but he still needs to prove himself at the NHL level. Looks like we might have some good additions on defense which should help the offense. When you look at the Flames right now what are we building around when we don't have any elite pieces on our top two lines. Then you have Huberdeau, he doesn't seem like a guy you can build around, or maybe we just haven't done a good enough job finding him some support.

Maybe Conroy can snag some more firsts that end up being a little higher in the draft over the next couple seasons.

With potentially two generational or at least franchise forwards headlining the next two drafts, it really feels like the path forward for the Flames should be obvious.

My dream is 10 for markstrom + Canucks pick. Flames grab Buium/Yakemchuk and then Tij. Take Tij with the 2nd of the picks so it looks like the flames weren’t over ranking him haha

The interesting thing is that Scott Wheeler made a similar comment in his article about the draft.

So which teams are likely to consider moving back?

The Canadiens, naturally, make the most sense. This a draft of more high-end D than is typical, but there’s still a finite number of them (five or six, depending on who you ask). They’re going to go early and often and the Habs have David Reinbacher, Kaiden Guhle, Lane Hutson and Logan Mailloux in tow. If they’ve settled on two or three forwards they like, moving back with a team that wants one of those top D would make a lot of sense.

The Flames feel like a natural dance partner as a team that is trying to prioritize the future, has a number of strong prospects, but could really use an A-grade piece to build around.

I just don’t know how you build around a goalie? Like are we going to be a defence first time while the league is exploding with scoring?
IMO Crawford was a pretty great goalie. The guy has a career sv% of .918 both in the regular season and in ~100 playoff games. He wasn't as flashy as some goalies in his era, but he absolutely got the job done.

Even in full scorched earth tank mode, the Flames likely only have a 10ish% chance at landing the #1 pick in any given draft. I don't see the Flames finishing dead last, which even then only give you an 18.5% chance at victory.

I don't think Markstrom + vans 1st gets you 10th oa. It would definitely mean max retention atleast.

Maybe you could get 15th oa from Detroit if you take Husso back and give then Marky+van 1st.

This is a terrible draft to move ahead. The only consensus seems to be there's no consensus 4-12

I also think there may be merit in NJD taking a hard look at a younger guy like Askarov that can be the #1 tender their with that growing core.
