He predicts that Backlund is going to stay. They further speculate on a combined press conference handing Backlund the 'C' and announcing an extension with the Flames. Steinberg adds that his sources in the organization all point to Backlund's desire to win with the Flames.
I have t listened to it but it now sounds like they think Backlund is going to be captain? Didn’t Francis think it was Anderson 3 days ago?

Steinburg is, and has been, a big fan of Backlund for....literally over a decade.

Doesnt mean he is right nor wrong either way.

I just take his Backlund stuff with a grain of salt.

It's mostly speculation after Z's comments, Andersson's comments, and Coleman's comments. Initially they were discussing Backlund staying, and if a lack of an extension can cost him the capitancy. They were even discussing that if we start the season without a captain that probably means they're working on a Backlund extension and that he could be named as a captain a couple of weeks into the season.

I agree with you, I just figured more information/opinions add to the discussion. Every information that's not from the organization, Lou, Leslie, or Friedman I take with a grain of salt.

Right. But Tkachuk had never scored a point per game over a season, and Huberdeau has done so multiple times. ‘Can he do it again?’ is a question with a lower bar than ‘Can he ever do it at all?’

Pretty sure it was sec who said the Flames offer is not an 8 year deal, which is pretty interesting.

The Flames could be playing hard ball on that which could explain why a deal hasn’t been signed. Lindholm probably is firm on 8 years but he also knows he can’t get that anywhere else. He may also know it’s unlikely he’s going to get more than what the Flames might currently be offering (8.5-9 seems to be the range most are speculating on). So it’s really going to come down to, does he want to be here? Does Lindholm want the security headed into the season? What if this seasons numbers are about the same as last years? If so, he might be leaving a good chunk of dough on the table. Could also explain why Lindholm seems to be coming across a bit pouty.

Some around here will tell you Lindholm’s isn’t a top 20 C in the leagu, so I suppose the question Lindholm needs to ask himself is, who else is going to pay him $9M per, let’s say, to be the 1C on a team that doesn’t already have a 1C, or a team with one coming up (Fantili), or how many teams are going b to pay $9M to their 2C?

Conroy could be playing this very well. Why give him 8 years when you may only have to give him 7? Personally, I don’t mind $9 per for 7 years. That gets him to 36.

Sec214 said that the Flames and Zadorov were not close on negotiations. While Zadorov himself said the Flames haven't made an offer as of yet. You have to take what sec214 says with a grain of salt.

Everybody in this business needs to be taken with a grain of salt. If he's just making stuff up, at least he's good at it.

If the agent said or implied what they were looking for, and the team isn’t close to that… then there wouldn’t be an offer.

I have come around to have a very optimistic outlook on the Flames this year and think there is a good chance this team has a 19/22 type year based on a few key factors:

1- the pending UFA’s. There are many motivated players who are playing for new contracts at key positions of the team. Lindholm and Hanifin are going to try and maximize the money, bonuses, clauses they will secure on a 7-8 year term, Zadorov and Kylington are playing to get long term extensions or deals elsewhere, I think Backlund and Tanev are going to keep doing what they always do and are more concerned about winning than their next deal.

2- bounce back candidates- Huberdeau, Markstrom, Mangiapane are all proud guys who want to do better. The fresh vibe and being injury free, and a renewed focus hopefully help them get back on track. I think Mangiapane is a candidate to be the winger on Huberdeau’s line and they could help each other bounce back. The thing with the net is the Flames have a guy one year removed from second in the Vezina and another who is the reigning AHL MVP so there is a chance the goaltending could be the leagues best.

3- injection of youth. This team missed this last year and even when Pelletier got a chance it was clouded with Sutter’s handling of things early. With Pelletier, Coronato and Wolf likely on the team I think there could be spots for other guys like Zary and maybe Poirier during the year. Adding some younger players will bring a better energy to the team which I think was lacking last year. It gives fans a glimpse into what could be the future of the team

4- change in coach and GM. Culture is set at the top and it was clear there was a divide between coach and GM last year. This year we have new people in the roles but people who are familiar with every aspect of the org. New faces joined the management team in Iginla and Nonis while new coaches Savard and Lambert will help tweak the style of play. It will be a more player friendly environment and hopefully that translates into better results in the ice.

This team was considered a contender entering last year and if they got one more goal here or another save there they would have been a top 10 team in the league for sure. With a year for all the changes in personnel to settle in and fresh vibes at the top I think the team is poised for a bounce back.

With that said will the bounce back entice Lindholm to accept the Flames reported offer around 8.75M? Will the Flames feel like they are on the right track and decide to meet the demands of Lindholm and sign him for what he says he is willing to take now? Remains to be seen but I am choosing to enter this season with expectations of a significant bounce back of the team and a fun regular season. If not I hope it goes the other way so the fact they can maximize their free agents as rentals would be beneficial for the long term and confirm that this team is not built to win

Interesting comment Conroy made is about the players knowing the cap is going up so they likely want a larger deal but it's hard to predict when it only went up 1 million.

They want a larger deal because the cap is expected to go up quite a bit more over the next 2-3 years.

Sure, whatever you say Grand Poohbah. One says offers have been made and the other says no negotiations have happened. That's the same thing and a variance of opinion/source? In what word? Log it in your spreadsheet and tell us about opinions. One is an absolute that something has taken place, the other is an absolute nothing has taken place. One is right and the other isn't. 1+1=2 is not the same as 1+1=/= 2. One has sources and the other s full of ####. Which is which is about be determined.

Sticking with the Dallas example, they’re set up to be contenders for a decade because in 2017, they drafted three franchise players within 36 picks

-Heiskenan 3rd
-Oettinger 26th
-Robertson 39th

When you get your shots, don’t miss.

This roster isn’t bad enough to tear down - with everything that went wrong last year, they were in it until game 81.

If all they did was play Wolf for 5 games, they make the playoffs.

Playoff hockey in the Saddledome is special. And some time in the next 3-5 years, it’s going to become nothing but a memory.

Maybe it’s as simple as ownership wanting to create as many new playoff memories as they can in the time the Dome has left.

Stuff like that matters to people.
Why what?
Why would is suck if we end up mediocre for 4-6 years and have to draft high because the team is eventually terrible?

Actually here's exactly what Zadorov said:

That can also be interpreted as waiting for the right offer. That's why both, Sec214 and Z, could be right. I can see it as both camps touching base, to figure out term and dollar ask in broad terms before making an actual offer.

I'm not in the room, so I have no idea what actually is going on, and what Z is considering as an offer.
