Another story in today's Herald: http://calgaryherald.com/news/local-...omes-drawbacks

Today's topic: Concerts bypassing Calgary because the Saddledome can't accommodate them.

Again, nothing new that we haven't known for the past seven years.

The influence of a newspaper peddler at work.

Massage that public opinion, Ken, massage it with the promise of another concert every 2 months.

It's clear Markusoff is pumping out continuous click bait and just trying to rustle feathers between the Mayor's office and the Flames right now.

In private meetings with Mayor Naheed Nenshi’s staff, King cited this problem. The mayor’s aides weren’t convinced of the magnitude. Policy adviser Josh White phoned up LiveNation’s Vancouver office in 2011 to find out the extent of the issue. Low told him the city may miss two to five concerts a year primarily because of the ‘Dome roof’s load-bearing limit, a number which he revised slightly for 2015.

2-5 concerts a year not the end of the world. No Maroon 5? Oh no.

I said there will some combination of funding/tax relief/land donation/infrastructure..and if there is even an interest free or ultra low interest loan that is government help.

A project that is this big will have some form of the above and I honestly don't care what they are saying now.

"No direct money" is putting lipstick on a pig.....I'm sorry but if people actually think no tax dollars are going into this they are fooling themselves.

Nenshi and his crew are simply working on their creative math to sell it to us like the sold it in Edmonton.
No direct money from the Province means no money coming from the province. I may be wrong here but the "provincial money" quoted in that page is actually given to the city for various funds and was chosen by the city to use for the Arena. Same with the Federal money. Thus not coming directly from the province.

This also means the City of Edmonton has less money to spend on other things in those areas.

With property taxes going up 4.9% in Calgary every year for the next four years I do think in the short term there will be a large public outcry for any public money going towards a project with taxes going up so much.

I know you are mostly joking, but Nenshi is a big supporter of music and the arts. I have seen him at almost every music festival that Calgary holds, and he is usually really involved.

I'm not going to stand up and say it's a huge issue but it's hard to portray yourself as a world class city when you cannot even accommodate world class concerts as most of the concerts that bypass are always of the large scale big act/event type. Also can't do outdoor concerts at McMahon for the most part because of the noise bylaws. This city is seriously lacking in the major music concert scene. I don't expect Nenshi to shed any tears over this but it is what it is.

I'm sure that there's many out there that will blame the Saddledome's sub-standard acoustics on Spendshi somehow.

What's the value of being able to proudly call yourself a "world class city" besides using it as a justification to spend other peoples' money on things you want.

Again.....call it whatever you want, it's provincial money and it's going to the arena.

I guess you have to ask anyone in city hall that calls the city "world class" that question.

Personally, I'd love to see a new arena. It would be great. And there is actually no reason other than the owners don't want to pay for it fully themselves that it isn't being built - they are not short of the resources to do so.

Sled Island, The Folk Festival, Afrikadey, Reggae Fest - that is what makes Calgary "world class", not a tour stop from a big commercial act.

Maybe I'm out of touch but who at city hall calls Calgary world class?

As business owners, they have every right to explore methods of financing other than their own. That's what smart businessmen and women do. The Flames ownership group is doing just that, and this is all part of going through the motions of the whole arena infrastructure process. I'd be more worried if this wasn't happening, which would mean nothing would be happening at all.

I'd love to see a new arena / stadium / redeveloped district, which I fully anticipate Calgary will be enjoying within the next 10 years regardless of who ends up financing what percentage of the project.

That's your opinion and as much as we pile on Edmonton they are already ahead of Calgary in the arts department and that gap will only increase as they get their new facility.

Personally I'm not going to spend a lot of time in this thread as it's just going to be people of differing opinions butting heads. We all know the new facilities will happen in Calgary and I'm content in watching it all play out.
