So I started playing again, and worked a character up to about level 305. Hoping I can be in somewhat respectable shape for the next Iron Banner. A few things in the Crucible I still find infuriating:
I constantly get 1-shotted with a shotgun from what seems like 20ft away. And yet when I try to use a shotgun, I often fail to kill anybody with 3 shots, from what seems like an ever closer range. I know lag pays a part in this, but still doesn't make sense.
Similarly for fusion rifles. At least I can get a few one shot kills, but from an in-your-face rage. But again, I seem to get one shot from 20-30ft away. From that distance, I can barely damage anybody with a fusion rifle.
Some of the shotgun sniping you're experiencing is definitely latency. They're further away on your screen when they shoot but are actually closer on theirs. Why it works like that who knows but you develop a sense of what the kill/danger ranges are when you use a shotgun enough.
Along with the fusion/shotgun range topic, some of those frustrations can be explained by weapon roll/user skill. What kind of shotgun are you using? Most people are running with a max range party crasher using aggressive ballistics for more impact. Fusions you really need to get a feel for recoil pattern/control. Been using them since the April patch and some of the longer range one shots are still hit/miss but that's probably as intended.
If you had some recorded footage I could probably get a better of what you're experiencing but I'm inclined to think that you're capable of the same things.
I've never spent much time trying to figure out shotguns, so haven't played too much attention to the perks and figuring out the right playstyle for me. I just expect that when it appears someone is point blank on my screen and I pull the trigger, any shotgun, regardless of perks, should kill them, or at least severely drop their health. And when that doesn't happen, I sort of give up trying to use shotgun that round. I'm wondering if it is something fundamental that I do wrong. I don't think I ever aim down sights with a shotgun. Is that what people do in Crucible? Does it do something unexpected like greatly reduce the spread or something?
Hmm, it seems I've dismantled most of the shotguns I had from Y1, which probably would have been fine for Crucible. I'm reading the Party Crasher, Conspiracy Theory D, Her Champion are all good options for the one hit kill that I'm looking for. I probably had all 3 at one time and deleted them to make room in my tiny vault. I guess I'll keep my eye open, and see about reacquiring the above so that I might be somewhat useful with secondary weapons in crucible. Though for now, running around meleeing people isn't working too poorly.

Aiming down sights with a shotgun reduces the spread and damage dropoff from what I've heard.
If you haven't done it yet, the vanguard strike questline gives you what would be considered a god roll conspiracy theory. It's the quest that has you do 5 legacy strikes, 5 heroic strikes, and a nightfall. Pretty much if you're getting killed by that gun, it's from that questline.
And the vendor vacancy from future war cult is a pretty good fusion rifle

@Bungie
Due to the same issue that prevented players from joining matches in Trials of Osiris, we are also cancelling Iron Banner for this week.
No Iron Banner this week
My only hope is they figured this out and fix it on Wednesday and let the event just run Wednesday to Monday (like they did last time with the rocket ammo glitch)

wow what roll do you have on that fusion? there's barely any spread

Vendor Phanta Rhei from the Crucible vendor. Comes with Rangefinder, Rifled Barrel and Kneepads. Once you get a feel for fusions, range is a much more consistent perk since stability can be controlled by either directing it down during fire so it's grouped together or aiming lower so the bolts travel from the enemy's legs, up.

Yea, your video was cool. I had never even thought to try for fusion kills at that range. Good to know that with the right perks and some practice, that it is possible.
Pretty bummed that Iron Banner is a no-go this week.

I was really hoping a patch was going to drop today and they'd just start it now like they did last time. Looks like Trials might be an issue this weekend too then, if this issue is not fixed (appears to be a light-leveled match making issue).

Nice GG sequence there - love those triple kill medals. I agree on the shotgun range based on that video; tough to get one shot from that distance.
Just a heads up (and I'm only saying this because other people I've played with did not know this), you can ADS with the golden gun - you don't have to fire from the hip. Again, not trying to be mean or anything, just noticed you never ADS in that whole sequence.

Probably about 98% of my primary weapon kills are ADS, but I rarely do it for the golden gun. Aim for center of mass, hip fire is accurate enough. If I've got time and the target is at range, I'll ADS with golden gun.

Okay, cool. I just remember I was running some Iron Banner one time (this was a while ago) and we were talking about the hunter helmet that increased zoom with ADS and two guys in the group were like "You can ADS with the GG?? No way!" So now I try to spread the word - haha

I think I was pretty clued in to the Destiny world in the first year or so after release. I put in enough hours.
But there were some maybe minor things that took me way too long to figure out:
The soft tone/beeping sound you hear occasionally when out patroling on your sparrow is from going in reverse.
Similarly, Hawkmoon makes a distinctive sound when firing the lucky shot. I had used it for about 2 months before my buddy (who finally just got it) pointed that out to me. With all the chaos of Crucible, so much that I didn't know.
Maybe the most embarrassing, I didn't really 'get' the Titan jump until I spent a good couple hours messing around in Crota's End solo. I would always jump, approach my peak, then hit jump to get my double jump in and hopefully reach higher. It mostly worked for me (hey, it got me from the Alpha until a good month into Crota's end). Then I finally put it together that double tapping jump the first time actually makes for a much higher arc. I've never tried Warlock, but I think I should stay away. I hear the jump is terrible.
The warlock jump is good for covering long distances, but it's definitely my least favorite of my three characters.
Hunters w/bones for life.

So it looks like there will be Y2 moments of triumph, similar to Y1. Bungie will officially announce it one July 7 (Bungie day), but they were leaked early:
Challenge of the Elders: Complete an Elder's Sigil scorecard in the Prison of Elders. The Play's the Thing: Complete the Taken King main questline, culminating in "Regicide". The Third Element: Equip a fully leveled Year Two subclass on any character. This is Amazing: Complete the Crucible questline culminating in "The Mountaintop." Eris Morn's Revenge: Collect all 50 Calcified Fragments A Blade Reborn: Complete any of the Exotic sword quests from Shaxx Return to the Reef: Complete the April quests "At the Gates" and "Return to the Prison" The Sword Logic: Defeat Oryx in the King's Fall Raid on Hard difficulty
I'm working towards my exotic sword (just need the last step and haven't been able to get a group together to do it yet). My only other outstanding item would be the 50 fragments, and 1 of the 2 that I am missing is the nightfall reward. Am I correct that it needs to be a Dreadnaught nightfall? And if so, is it a guaranteed drop? Just wondering if I should start running nightfalls weekly in an attempt to get this one, or just wait for Darkblade or Shield Bros.

I can't figure out if I've completed the Mountaintop questline.
I don't think I have as I can't access to weekly crucible bounties.
When I look in the abandoned quest kiosk though, I don't have any of the quests from the crucible quest line (Crucible Forged, Crucible Combat, Conquer the Day, Factions, Trials Practice, Break the Ceiling,Weapons Master, or The Mountaintop).
Shaxx doesn't offer me any quests either.
