Question about wide angle lenses. I've narrowed it down to the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X 116 Pro DX and the AF-S Nikkor 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5G DX ED for my next purchase(d7000). Heavily leaning towards the Nikkor as I think the extra range will be useful and not sure I really need the 2.8. What makes the decision hard is that everything I have read has the Tokina to be the sharper lens(and a fair amount cheaper).
Anyone have experience with both of these? Reg, I think I remember you having, or at least trying, both. If so, what are your thoughts on these. Any input on either lense would be greatly appreciated.

I can't really comment on the abilities of either lens, but I'll say that you'll wish you had the f/2.8 at some point in the future. The extra stops will be better for low light situations and depth of field control.

i've got the tokina SD 11-16 F2.8 (IF) DX for a canon. it works great - i have no complaints about the lens at all.... and having the 2.8 is really nice!

Yeah, I've owned both lenses, mind you I owned the first version of the Tokina and found the Nikkor to be much sharper.
I rarely used it at f/2.8 as it was for architecture and night shots (used tripod at night).
I have heard that the new Tokina is better than the original.
I did find the extra mm's handy on the Nikkor as well.
That being said, some of favorite photographs were shot with the Tokina...

Question about uploading photos. Wanting to have a generic account my own shots that I'd like to share and I'm sure something like Flickr or Picasa would get it done.
At the same time, I do a lot of shots during family get togethers (regular parties which easily reach 20 times a year with a huge extended family all living in Calgary) so I'd like to somehow have a main album private and available to whoever has the link, with the ability to make sub albums based on each event. Any advice would be appreciated.
Edit: And on the topic of wide angle lenses, only been shooting a bit but I've found myself generally staying at the shortest length.

Anduril - i know you can make different folders with different public/private settings - but why not just start two different accounts...that might be easier?

You can do private albums on Flickr and then share the link to them. I've done that for a couple of my albums and it works pretty well. If you need something that other people can also upload to you'll probably need something else, but for just sharing your photos with a small group it works.

Was considering that if there wasn't a means to make a private main album -> sub albums as my family members might struggle with more than one link.

You are using a DX camera, which unfortunately reduces your options for a fast wide-angle lens significantly. I do use ad DX camera body (D5100) for light travel and I do have a few DX-lenses, including Nikkor 12-24, which is a heavier and better built lens than a plasticky 10-24. However; I have not used it much lately since acquiring Sigma 8-16. It is an excellent rectilinear super wide-angle lens for a DX camera body and I highly recommend it. It is not very fast, of course.
For rectilinear wide-angle f/2.8, if you really need it, you are into some serious dollars though, unless you are prepared to go manual. I use Nikkor 14-24 for stationary shots and 17-35 for walking. Both are heavy and bulky full-frame lenses. To save a few bucks, you have to be creative and use combos. You can get a cheesy-looking manual Rokinon 14mm 2.8 for $300, which beats a $2800 Zeiss in some tests. Another consideration would be to go for a good fisheye lens, like Sigma 8mm f/3.5 - they are small and lightweight. I keep one in my pocket when walking with a DX-camera.

No one, I just don't see how you're thinking of MMF with that comment. He's pretty level-headed in political threads from what I've seen.

I say let's stop this right here. If he didn't find my comment funny, I'm sure he'll let me know.

Supernoob question here, but how can I redownload the original files from Flickr? The FAQ says:
Quote:
Can I access my original images?
We resize your photos to more web-friendly dimensions. Each image has a 75x75 and 150x150 square thumbnail and 100-, 240-, 320-, 500-, 640- 800*-, 1024-, 1600*-, and 2048*-pixel versions (that's the length of the longest side), as well as your original file.
When you view an individual photo page, click the "More" menu and then "View all sizes".
Your original files are available for you to download at any time. You can also use the global setting in your account to specify who can download original files: Only you; your friends and/or family; your contacts; any Flickr user; or anyone.
|
Global Settings are where I want them to be, just not seeing anything else other than Commenting/Delete Photo under 'More' for each photo.

Click on the image you want to share so it's the only one you're seeing. Look at the bottom right - here's an example of what you want to be looking for, to click - that pinked out arrow in the box. Then choose your size (where it says 'square 75 (75x75)', copy and paste the BBCode - done.
