Its been disgusting all day we been lied to saying today would be better.
Not sure how anyone saw blue skies.
Maybe the smoke inhaled has finally caught up to us.

If it's still smoky tomorrow you can be mad at me, but I'm not a professional.

They don't even get fired!
Tell your kid to be a weather forecaster, more un-firable than a teacher. "What's that? I was wrong? well so was Dave last week, so we are even."

What is happening? Climate change?
I'm usually the skeptical one when people always say "when I was a kid, things weren't this way" but there is empirical data here.

The immediate cause is BC forest fires, with several big fire seasons starting from 2017.
Is that climate change, the result of decades of unnecessary fire suppression, maybe some combination of both?
Interestingly, area burned in Alberta has a weak correlation with smoke in Calgary. 2011, 2012, 2016 and 2019 all had more than 500K ha.

I am starting to think fire suppression is rearing ugly head. I get it, it saved homes and likely lives.
Glass half full is hopefully better forest management.

It's not fire suppression.
It's a bad mountain pine beetle cycle, likely exacerbated by climate change.

With some piss poor forestry management policy thrown in for good measure.

It’s weird to hear people blame this on fire suppression.
If you spend any time in the mountains it’s so obvious that it gets super dry, which enables forest fires.
It’s getting worse as we have hotter days, hotter nights, less frequent rain, often less total rain in summer months, and same amount of lightning.
The heat and lack of rain impact enormous tracts of forest, leading to enormous forest fires.

We also have increased activity in these areas. Given the lack of storms, I assume almost all of these were human caused. Between oil and gas, forestry, seismic lines, recreational activity, and other uses there are just a lot more people all over the place. Would we be having all these fires right now if people were not there? Probably not.

the smoke is pretty gross here - obviously not as bad as calgary, but if you were hoping for clear or even hazy skies you're out of luck
my wife said to me yesterday that it feels like mid-late august with the smoke, not may
environment canada has also issued air quality warnings here

And then get much worse late Friday night into Saturday with a system moving in from the Alaska/NWT area to Northern AB that will send a whole new wave of smoke our way.
