I kinda have a conspiracy in my mind that it's kind of intentional to let these big acts skip Calgary to give the impression that they're not coming because of the outdated venue, which increases public pressure on getting a new one. Yes, Saddledome have some structural issues for some stages, and I don't know if these acts that have skipped simply couldn't do it in the Saddledome, but I find it suspicious since they've come before.

Kanye's new show wouldn't work in Calgary. The stage is a platform hanging from the roof over the middle of the crowd.

In general its probably far cheaper for the people who want to go to concerts that bypass Calgary just to drive to Edmonton then it is for the City of Calgary to spend 500 million to build CalgaryNext as currently envisioned.
Concerts skip us, so we aren't a "world class" city is not a very compelling reason to build a football stadium that won't house said concerts.

I totally agree with you - and I'm a guy who goes to Edmonton or Vancouver two or three times a year strictly for concerts.
I'm just saying that the arguments that "not that many shows skip Calgary" or "they aren't skipping because of the rink/stadium" are total bunk.
There are lots of shows that are skipping Calgary strictly because of our lack of adequate facilities.

Oh no, a bunch of over-hyped musicians won't play in our old arena for us measly peasants! Better hand over hundreds of millions of dollars!
If Oil Stain's cautionary tale of how a new arena could be the same viewing experience for those of us who can't afford lower bowl seats, I think I'll stick with my current Saddledome experience, thank you very much.

If this has been proposed before, please forgive me. I'm not sure why they don't simply finance the project themselves and then use a ticket tax to recoup their investment. We have no sales tax in Alberta, so having the people who actually attend events paying 7% extra for the privilege to do so seems to make sense to me.
That's how the Corral was built.

I used to be of the opinion that Calgary needs a new Arena.
But The Saddledome is fine.

Calgary needs and deserves a new arena get it done Calgary. I live in Central Alberta seen the new rodgers place and now the Saddledome will be depressing every time I come in for a game. This is a class a city stop screwing around and get a arena to match.

Why do they need a new arena? Aside from trying to keep up with the Joneses that is.

It's said to be among the worst in the league. It's certainly one of the oldest (and MSG just had a renovation more expensive than anything Calgary is thinking of spending on a new arena and stadium).
ETA: as soon as Detroits is finished, Calgary will be older than all but MSG, and by at least 10 years.

Sure, age and usefulness of the building are legitimate reasons to discuss needing a new arena.
However, Flamenfame essentially made the argument that Edmonton has a new arena and now Calgary's arena doesn't seem very nice. That amounts to a "shininess factor" argument.

It's old outdated and lacks a lot of attraction to the fans that NHL rinks offer now. I was in the sportsnet lounge for the Oilers game I had prime rib during the game. The scoreboard is massive bathroom access everywhere video screens everywhere you look. Best time I had at a hockey game in a long time my seat was so comfortable. Has nothing to do with the Jonses it's all about giving the fan the best for the high price they pay to go and watch.

Sounds great! Let's make the fans pay for the arena with a massive seat tax and leave the city/province out of it. That way people that use the arena pay for it.

I don't care how they do it just get it done! How can a team continue to charge huge ticket prices and give them 2nd rate amenities while charging more then other teams. I love Calgary the city the people deserve this . Hopefully by 2021 a new one is completed, I also think it shoud be a stand alone facility.

They are proposing a ticket tax which funds somewhere between 250-350 million of the project. Unfortunately they are looking to do more. Though that amount plus what the owners were going to contribute gets you pretty close to a stand alone arena.

I'd love to see King announce that they don't need any public funding, but instead will build it on their own. If you can finance $350 million through a ticket tax, you can finance $800 million.

Supply and Demand. The Flames still sell out most games.
And you do know that a new stadium will mean higher ticket and beer prices right?
It's time to stop public financing of private stadiums. If Calgary has to be the first to buck the trend and as a result the Flames have the oldest stadium in the league then so be it.
