Shhh, maybe we can convince them to take Breen and free up a roster spot for someone who can actually play defence.

Apparently it was to kick in this year so they could send him down.

I believe the contract will just slide - much like Sieloff's contract did. Kulak wasn't signed last year when the Flames assigned him to the Heat for the playoffs, thus the ATO.
NHL teams can assign players from the CHL under contract to the AHL at any time, as long as their respective CHL teams allow it. Due to the Pats not having any games left, Flames simply assign him I believe, and the contract slides.

The wrinkle is that the AHL/CHL agreement says that if a player is drafted by an NHL team from the CHL, they can't be assigned during the CHL season if they're younger than 20.

So for the purposes of assignment, when is the CHL season over? When the team they play for is eliminated or when the Memorial Cup is awarded?
Edit: Is the 4 completed seasons rule still in place as well? I know the old agreement (circa 2006) used to state that it was 20 years old prior to December 31st or if they had 4 completed seasons. Rarely did the latter come into effect as not that many 15 year olds in the CHL.

So no Klimchuk or Poirier this season? They're both 19...

CHL players can be assigned to the AHL when their team's CHL season is complete.

As long as he's on Abbotsford's eligibility list, he should be good.

Kulak signed an ATO with Abbotsford per the AHL transactions page:
http://theahl.com/stats/transactions...&f_team_id=379
Billins also recalled per the same page

The page is now showing it as a PTO and the Flames are calling it as an assignment.
No wonder there is confusion among fans as to what the rules or process is for assigning CHL players to the AHL.

These things are always such a mess and just when we think we've figured it out a new CBA happens and you have to relearn them all.

RT @fan960boomer: With the Regina Pats season over, expect Morgan Klimchuk to join the Abbotsford Heat in short order. #flames

There's going to be a lot of hard working Aces getting sent down to make room for these guys... Or Ward is going to have more players than dressing room stalls.

It's always that way. The guys on ATOs and a recalls from Alaska get the spare dressing room unless they're put in the lineup in which case they get a stall in the main dressing room.
