Well, that's not true, as they absolutely do talk about those things. They just don't talk about them very much and for good reason: people don't really care about them much. They're a local sports station. And locally, hockey is the ticket.

Yeah honesty any time they do talk about anything other than hockey, I turn it off. Baseball is fun in playoffs and this recent blue Jays run but 99% of the time it is boring talk. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Edmonton has a Bell owned TSN Sportsradio station and it's still 95% hockey talk in hockey season and 50 in the summer. They made a bit of an effort to try and drum up some F1 stuff in the summer. But with TSN having no Oilers programming they can leverage for local T.V. I would have thought they'd try to peddle other sports that are still popular in Canada like the NFL. Still they get a NFL guy on the radio on a Tuesday afternoon for a 15 minute segment and they get a bunch of text messages crying that they're not talking about Josh Archibald's vaccine status. Half the Sunday and Monday night Football broadcasts don't happen because they'll have an Oilers pre or post game show.
So that tells me that the local market for a more overall sports broadcaster isn't there. The people who really want that likley have SiriusXM where you can't find much Local Hockey Team coverage.

Kelly Kirch does those between-periods features on Flames alumni. Though some episodes are oft-repeated, it's kinda interesting to vicariously catch up with them.

It's nice to see so many supporters of the morning show. I've always been a fan but assumed that many here didn't like it! All 3 of those guys bring something of value and unique to them in the mornings and they have awesome chemistry together. I love their sports discussions as much as their other discussions including the silly things like their food brackets. Very glad the Fan is keeping all of them together.

Nice guy and I hope he lands on his feet.
If the Morning Show was ever to be discontinued, it would mean the end of the station entirely. Its the flagship of the whole thing.
Boomer is a huge radio talent, Pinder, as much as I can't stand his smary nonsense, is also a rising star in that industry.
Pat is very much a true pro but i think will be limited in where he can go in broadcasting but he is a terrific writer as well and will be fine in the sports media landscape.
Doubt anyone else at 960 has a bright future in radio either, though I think they would be well served to get a female host who can carry a show. Mango should give it a go!
|
THIS. As much as I like Pinder and Warrener in their roles and what they add to show, when Boomer is away from the morning show the drop in quality is definitely noticeable. Pinder even feels slightly awkward as the host. Maybe because he's trying to be Boomer

Doesn't Francis essentially pay for his own airtime with ads?

I have never heard them talk those sports. The most they'll do during a major event like the World Cup is bring someone on for 10 minutes, if that.
But more importantly, if it's true that people would rather listen to hockey babble 24/7, that's pretty sad.

When are you listening? Just this morning Pinder was interviewing someone from Calvary FC, and it was for more than 10 minutes.

The Francis family is wealthy, he's probably paying 960 to go on the air.

Eric Francis is the Teflon man. I'm sure if a nuclear bomb exploded on the city the only living creatures remaining would be cockroaches and Eric Francis.

If the only on air change is Rintoul and Surman are gone and no Rome then that's fine by me. It was instant switch the channel once either of those started.

Yes he plays the obnoxious heel very well. He is extremely arrogant and likes to talk down to what the fans want or think should happen. He delivers it with such certainty and he has been proven to be completely off before.

If you think tennis babble is more interesting than hockey babble you should checkout CalgaryRacket. I hear it’s pretty wild.
More seriously: most people are not listening 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Most people probably listen for the span of their commute or lunch hour, if not listening to an actual game. Maybe it’s just sad to listen to AM Radio enough that it would bother you? Unless you’re like 80 I guess.

Can’t stand the repetitive negative bickering about the lack of quality tennis prospects and how terrible management is at CalgaryRacket.
