I've been watching The Sopranos for the first time since about Christmas. Lin-Manuel Miranda appearing in a later season was not on my bingo card

I did. Certainly much better than the rest of that season.

Raised by Wolves. I can't begin to imagine a more complex dystopia. Season 1 was somewhat disjointed and confusing season 2 is both much more cohesive and perplexing at the same time. Incredible show.

I was pretty on board with season 1, but 2 has lost my interest I'd say.

Heads up that the Big Mouth spinoff Human Resources is now available on Netflix. Might have to binge that tonight.

I just finished my series re-watch and didn't notice him. When did he show up?

Started Succession based on the reviews here. Really enjoying it. Didn't think it'd be this funny, thought it was more of a Suits type thing (which I abandoned pretty quickly). Didn't know Adam McKay was involved. Really enjoying it so far, although I can see how the lack of any sympathetic characters could get a little tiresome. You need SOMEONE to root for.
Side note: Am I crazy or is the office set the same as Suits?

keep going with it, though I wouldn't say they try to drum up sympathy for characters in the traditional sense, they become complex enough that you at least understand and accept why they are that way. one of the biggest accomplishments of Succession is making the billionaire life seem like a low key nightmare, rather than the unlimited paradise people might assume it to be.

He was a bellhop at a hotel IIRC. A few other cameos at poker games over the years, usually people playing themselves.

Sopranos had a ton of cameos and bit parts.
Besides some of the more obvious ones like Annette Benning and Ben Kingsley, Lady Gaga was one of AJ’s friends that trashed the pool, Will Arnett played the FBI agent’s boyfriend, Paul Dano was another of AJ’s friends, Michael B Jordan was in one of Tony’s flashbacks to when he was a kid and found out his dad was a gangster.
There are quite a few more.

Speaking of cameos, or appearances before they were famous, Google 'Nick Offerman Deadwood'.

Or you could just watch Seinfeld.

Now that would be an interesting discussion with the IRS.

Has anyone watched 'The Dropout' ?
Its about Elizabeth Holmes, the person behind the Theranos scandal and the focus of the HBO documentary 'The Inventor: Out for Blood.'
I find many aspects of this interesting, I enjoyed the HBO Doc because it focused on not only the human element of 'Fake it 'till you Make it,' Corporate Fraud and the celebrity of a young, college dropout female CEO, etc. It was interesting.
But the problem with Elizabeth Holmes is that not only is she a proper crazy person, she is a properly uninteresting crazy person.
I watched one episode of 'The Dropout' and it was a chore. I just couldnt care less about this person. Does it get better or does it emulate its source material and just remain endlessly uninteresting.
I would say that the only real bright spark of Episode 1 was when she went to the University and was told:
"Its a neat idea, but it wont work. The reasons why are plentiful and obvious."
And then she throws a childish tantrum.
To continue or not to continue, that is the question!

I've been obsessed with the Theranos story since it broke a few years ago. I use it constantly in my classes as a case study of unethical scientific entrepreneurism. I know every major plot point in the series, as well as all the major players and their character traits.
It's really well done, in the sense that it's very accurate to what happened. That first interaction with the professor has been well publicized, so I'm glad they included it as a seminal moment where someone tried to steer her in another direction. I really, really like Seyfried as Holmes. She did a crazy amount of research into the person and she nails the character and her mannerisms, especially later on when she morphs into CEO mode.
It's a fascinating story, and I think it's totally worth the watch. They dramatize some moments later that a documentary cannot do justice to. Plus, it has Stephen Frye in it, and I love that guy.

I missed lady gaga, and don't think I'd even be able to point her out. Her role as well as Miranda must have happened when they were relative nobodies. I wouldn't even call them cameos.

Total nobodies. Although I do think Miranda had maybe started In the Heights by then but you're right not cameos in the usual sense.
Gaga's role was nothing and easy to miss. For whatever reason the camera kind of lingered on Miranda as if we was a somebody at the time. I only watched the Sopranos recently and it seemed unusual.

I've been meaning to watch the series since I walked the HBO documentary. Theranos is a really interesting story to me because I work in the Startup world, and Theranos is an easy trap for someone to fall into as an entrepreneur.

The fascinating question to me is whether Homes started with decent intentions and fell into the SOV fake it until you make it culture.
Or was it a scam from the very outset.
There is a lot that is not very genuine about her which implies the latter. I plan to watch the show but have read much or all of Carreyrou's reporting, podcasts etc. and documentaries. Some smart people argue she fell into a trap but IMO that is letting her off too easy.
