I can see your point there. We have a community box in front of our office and we've never had an issue with anything other than increased traffic. People park in front of it but only for a couple minutes.
Never really had a problem with garbage and, when I lived in an apartment they actually did put bins out for recycling and garbage right at the mailbox.
However, I can definitely see some people being careless and inconsiderate about it and why you wouldnt want it on your property.

It mostly a traffic thing because the box is on a busy road, but they cant read it at flamesfever's house without having to evade gunfire apparently....

Between my community mail box and my house are four trash and four organics bins. I open my mail on my short walk home. All of the recyclable paper and trash is disposed of appropriately.

I am generally disinclined to be willing to pay people who are doing a bad job more money to continue doing it poorly.
Further reinforced by CRA striking, getting paid more, getting a bigger budget and then proceeding to roll out one of the single most fataed-up Tax Seasons in a generation.
You want more money? What are you going to give for it?

summary from CBC on the Canada Post situation.
Canada Post is in a frightful mess and the union seems to stupid to realize that.
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/canad...acts-1.7539354
How bad is it?
About as bad as it gets. The last time it made a profit was 2017. Since then it has lost $3 billion.
This summer, Canada Post will have to refinance other loans worth $500 million and, it says, by 2026 it will need $1 billion a year from the government just to meet its financial obligations.
Canada Post hit peak letter delivery nearly 20 years ago. In 2006, it delivered 5.5 billion letters. In 2023 it delivered only 2.2 billion letters.
But here's the thing. Letters are an albatross around Canada Post's neck.
It has a monopoly on delivering them. In return, it agrees to service every single address in Canada .
Since 2006, Canada has added three million new addresses as the population has grown. Canada Post has to serve them all. But it's delivering more than three billion fewer letters to them.
When it comes to parcel delivery, there is no monopoly, and there is no set price.
Canada Post admits it's getting beaten. Badly. In 2019, it delivered 62 per cent of the packages in this country. In 2023, it was only 29 per cent.
Canada Post says part of the reason it can't compete is that it doesn't deliver on weekends, while many private companies do. It wants to hire more part-time staff to work those days, but the union says that amounts to gig work, and won't accept it.
Canada Post claims most of its employees can't be laid off under any circumstances, which it characterizes as "jobs for life."
Indeed the collective agreement says "there shall be no temporary or permanent lay-off of any employee (excluding term employees)" who have been employed for more than five continuous years. Canada Post claims the vast majority of its workforce is in that situation.

So why can't they have full-time workers do it? Like have some employees move their schedule up or down two days?

Say you're an employee who has worked Monday to Friday for twenty years. Why would you be interested in working on Saturday and/or Sunday if you're not going to get paid more for giving up your weekend.

The fact that Canada post can't fire employees despite obvious issues is a crab mentality.

I don't love "I don't want to do this work but won't let my employer hire someone else to do it either" as a response.
The old people who love Canada Post might not be a big enough constituency to get the government to shovel billions into it anymore. It's a big risk for the union/employees, as reductions in delivery (community boxes, less frequency) with associated cuts are definitely a possibility here, and if it doesn't get fixed even more drastic actions could be required. EG Denmark's national postal system is ending letter delivery completely at the end of this year.

Are you under the impression that in 2023 Canada post is shipping half of the parcels they did in 2019?
This dispute is a mess for a lot of reasons but man these misleading stats/arguments aren’t helpful.
