let's ride 6 guys wide and totally block the road when there is a designated bike lane... you know... for bikes only!

any use of hand signals to let vehicles know their intentions - oh hell no
reflective apparel at night... dude... that doesn't look cool!
another cyclist one that gets me is when you're sitting at a red light and buddy goes flying past in the bike lane at breakneck speed towards the intersection. the light turns green and someone turns right cutting off the cyclist. yea, the car was "in the wrong" but don't cyclists value their life? sure you technically had the "right of way", but now, if you're lucky, you only have a bunch of broken bones/concussion/etc and your bike is toast.

Ohhh. I can do this too, but for drivers. And for the record, you have never seen six cyclists riding side by each. Good hyperbole though.
Drivers run amber and red lights. Those lights must not be for them.
Speed limits? Not for drivers.
Stop signs? Those are only for cyclists. Drivers can roll right through those.
Using signals to indicate when a driver is going to turn? Not on my watch!
Turning the lights on your vehicle, both front and back? No need when the interior lights are on.
To say only cyclists break the road laws is egregious and hypocritical.

The switch to LED streetlights hasn't helped, either. They're okay at illuminating roads, but the sidewalks are pitch black, especially if there's any sort of tree canopy.

To your last point, that's why this is the correct way to design a right turn crossing a bike lane with no direct signal control.
https://maps.app.goo.gl/6xfzjnJQGmM5xbC38
This way, if you are turning right, you occupy that space so a cyclist can't enter it and cause the issue you describe. Unfortunately it also fails, because only about 1 in 10 drivers seem to understand this, and still signal and turn from the vehicle lane, completely avoiding the dashed section and creating a hazard for cyclists.
|
i of course was generalizing when it comes to ALL cyclists, but i will stand by this - the more 'tour de francey' they look the more rules don't apply. the dude biking down the street wearing jeans and a tee shirt who may/may not be wearing a helmet - that guy stops at red lights/stop signs - and tends to follow 'the rules'... at least in my experience.
that link you posted was interesting... i went and checked google maps at a few spots around kelowna and they don't really do that dashed line here - but it is used at bus stops
https://maps.app.goo.gl/9SdWFMCxVtEAhFqi6
https://maps.app.goo.gl/Xnu5aGUNpQUc4L5Y9
https://maps.app.goo.gl/iArgA5NqcLF6UFWf8
dotted lines for bus stop: https://maps.app.goo.gl/tkSKz7u21TJw1fkW9
*** i did find a few intersections where google maps is more 'up to date' and it looks like maybe kelowna is starting to do the dashed bike lane lines at some intersections... but knowing cyclists here, they'll throw a hissy fit that "YOU'RE DRIVING IN THE BIKE LANE!!!!"

you need to drive with me.
the amazing thing was with the six wide it was this huge pack (i'd guess 25-30) of 'tour de francey' types taking up the entire lane on one of the most dangerous roads in our area
https://maps.app.goo.gl/EoGrbSiYVZaBgKXB6
and then they can't figure out why drivers get annoyed at them

They aren’t the only ones. But basically every cyclist I see breaks a law. I see hundreds of cars a day and rarely see someone break a law. Outside speeding.

Divorce in 2025 RGMG's. I have a lot of people in my social circle who are going through really tough times in their marriages, children affected badly and so on. I get some of the usual issues like cheating but there is a lot of just general unhappiness on the part of 1 party (men and women). Issue that hadn't been brought up, people being blindsided by this.
I am looking and talking to people on both sides and sitting here wondering what is the actual problem here? How is this not solvable or workable? Why would you not try and repair things? Personally I am not married or have children but it seems general respect, kindness and looking after family unit have gone to hell. People appear to be choosing the dumbest option or have mental deficiencies about what the near future holds.

Many families will be better off if there was a divorce. Children will not thrive in an unhappy home. Couples should seek marriage counseling, but being married is hard once the honeymoon is over.
The divorce rate in Canada has been declining, with approximately 40% of marriages ending in divorce. In 2020, the rate was about 5.6 divorces per 1,000 married individuals, a significant drop from previous years.

You make a city that you basically need a car to get anywhere in any reasonable amount of time.
You start 5,000 construction projects at once, don’t finish any, reduce speed limits arbitrarily, and let construction companies just close off huge swaths of major thoroughfares for no reason and months on end. Pylons literally everywhere.
You don’t fund police enough to enforce traffic properly.
You have an astronomical immigration / population migration rate into your city that can’t keep pace, and the biggest reason of all:
You haven’t really done any enforcement about, or literally anything about, people being on their phones while they drive.
|
Is talking/texting while driving that big of a thing anymore with advancing technology? I only ask because anecdotally in my social/work circle literally everyone is using Bluetooth and talk to text for phone calls and texting. I can't even remember the last time I saw someone hold a phone to their ear while driving. It feels like Narnia now to see someone holding a phone as a driver.

TIL I was driving in Narnia last week...watching a truck in front of me wander over lane lines, speed was varying by 10 to 20 kmh. Yup, sure enough, when it was safe to pass him, I did. Yes, he was on his phone.
Also, still see people crotch watching at red lights all the time, on their phones.

Yep, 100% agree with this...now. It took me awhile, but now I'm on board. I used to get irritated by "poor cyclist habits" on the road but then I realized wait, I run amber lights (even a little red once in a while), I speed when it makes sense to me, I barely stop at stop signs when it's obvious I'm alone. In fact I ignore any traffic laws that don't suit me in the moment. And yet I was holding cyclists to this stupid standard because I don't cycle in traffic? That is peak human hypocrisy.

Laugh out ***ing loud, man. If I spent any amount of time paying attention to drivers breaking the law, I could probably write a book a day on Calgary drivers and their traffic infractions without even paying special attention. What is the BS, lol?

This City seems like its going insane.
I was standing outside of a bar tonight waiting for my UBER ride home and it nearly turned into an all-out brawl for no reason.
Its like Ghostbusters 2 where the anger level in the City is ratcheted up to 11 or something.
I've got to thank my friends. That was nuts.

Bit of a strawman. Nobody is saying cyclists always break the law and motorists never do.
Take off your super-defensive Team Cyclist hat for a minute and ask yourself if cyclists signal when they turn or stop at stop signs as often as motorists. You can’t say with a straight face that they do. The next time you’re on a shared pathway, count the ratio of cyclists who use bells when they’re overtaking pedestrians and other cyclists, and those that just silently whizz past.
Cyclists have a deserved reputation for ignoring the rules of the road. Doesn’t make motorists perfect angels. But the best thing cyclists can do to change that reputation is actually obey the rules of the road / cycle paths. If even half of cyclists routinely signalled turns, used their bells, etc. their (our) reputation would improve.

lol, come on this is peak Weitz head in the sand nonsense. You can drive from one turn off on Deerfoot to the other and you're going to encounter distracted drivers (txting, doing make up, eating), aggressive drivers tailgating and/or weaving between lanes, some not using turn signals to do so. And you're 100% driving with someone who is in some level of intoxication. Wether it's having a few drinks, a full blown alcoholic who swears they're okay or someone who hit their vape before or as they drive.
And speeding counts, it might be the worst, especially when combined with any of the others. So "outside" speeding? Speeding counts.

To summarize, people are doing a better job of late communicating with their partners and verbalizing their issues. Instead of going through the motions, staying together, but finding happiness in ugly ways like cheating etc…
Sounds like a positive to be honest. Speaking as a child of a parental unit who didn’t get divorced… for some reason.
