It's much less awful at the Zoo than it was this morning when I arrived.

Here's what the problem is .

If you refuse to clean your vents and ducts and or just hire any company or the cheaper company then you'll definitely need 3M . Just DO NOT leave it in the furnace for the 90 days they say it's good for....that's so patently false it makes my head spin.

3m would have you believe it filters out pixie dust, cure cancer and give you a digger bick....just to sell they're furnace destroyers .

If you must use them change them monthly. Even worse are the Kirkland filters . Any pleated or woven filter will be as bad as the 3M .

Long story short. Hire reputable furnace companies to not just clean the vents and ducts to keep your furnace cleaner longer but hire a company that CARES and employs grouchy old men that do it right....ALL of it ....Furnace vent and ductwork cleaning services with furnace tuneups , inspections and cleaning ALL in one .

Heck....I know a guy....wish i could remember that suckers name but he's been around for a while and is a dinosaur and knows his stuff....If I remember his name I'll post it in the power ring.

Meanwhile.....friends don't let friends buy junk. Just my 2 cents

I flew into Regina this morning and it's perfectly clear. About to board a flight to Edmonton. I hear it's not good there.
A guy from Winnipeg just told me the smoke is bad there. weird.

Went and picked up a portable air purifier, stock is very low.

Not sure why you find it weird. Weather systems (which is whats moving the smoke around) can vary within a specific portion of any province, so one should not be surprised if the weather pattern is completely different in a neighbouring province.

Lowe's has some generic cheap (breathable) ones. They are hard to find though as almost all types available are 3M

This is the right answer. Well made high MERV pleated filters can have respectable static pressure ratings and cheaply made low MERV ones can be awful. And what kind of static pressure your system can handle through the filter is totally dependant on the setup (duct size, filter size, air velocity, etc.).

Unfortunately, most home duct systems are designed absolutely terribly and are undersized, which increases velocity and static pressure. That leaves less room in the static pressure budget for a decent filter.

But if done properly, you can easily have excellent filtration with no negative impact to your blower. I use 2" pleated MERV 8 filters and they only add about 0.08" of static pressure (I've verified this with a manometer). On the other hand, a cheaper pleated filter on a poorly designed system (undersized filter/ducts, high air velocity, etc.) might add 0.5" of static pressure, which is massive.

My manometer tells me I don't need to RTFM. It'll be fine.

Also , you need to include in that or they do that gas pressure when referring to.water column needs to be 3.2 at high altitude here in Calgary.

80 % of water column on Calgary furnaces are between 3.4 and 4.2 which translates into higher temperatures on temperature sensitive components which is too high ....add to that a restrictive filter and now we have a higher temperature altogether....so limits fail to anticipate, motors ( inducer , dc and ecm) all work harder and Rev higher and factory oil boils out of them and ecm won't run a true variable speed or modulate.

This is why merv ratings are bunk UNLESS all of the other variables are taken into consideration.

There's even more to put u to sleep with when doing diagnosis so I won't bore anyone.

I know it's gross out there still, but it can't still possibly be at 11 on the air quality health index like WN is showing, right? I feel like they're always a couple hours behind...possibly just leaving it at the day's highest level to ensure people take precautions as well? It seemed 100 times worse this morning when it originally said 11.

I just ask because I'm about to walk a few blocks for tacos - don't feel like driving - and trying to convince myself I can haha

The tacos will do more damage than the air quality.

You’ll get plenty of takers on Kijiji today. Slip in Everlasts business card for when their motor goes. Take your commission check and buy the cheap filters. Profit.

Go for the tacos. I celebrated Tuesday by walking to Quesada tonight. No regrets.
