In order to change, it would have to impact the people that make the laws…for example, if a mass shooting were to kill/injure several members of congress or senate (or their loved ones), I think it would change things from “thoughts and prayers” to “outrage and action” from the lawmakers themselves
The gun lobbyists would just direct their money toward the replacement politicians. Rinse and repeat. The failed States will become the next failed state.
It's the money that's in play. Plenty of brilliant people down there. Tons of very smart people in Congress. It's just that the majority of them are on the take. Dems and Republicans.
The only way I could see any sort of change coming into play would be governments requiring owners to insure their guns. To buy this gun you must buy insurance with it, it doesn't cost much, you can reduce your payments if you can prove you have a gun safe, a track record of gun safety, taken courses etc. Insurance companies start losing money because of irresponsible gun owners, insurance companies have literal trillions at their disposal and an even more engaged group of lobbyists than the gun world, and congress starts implementing more reasonable gun laws to save their insurance companies money. Money has always been more important than human lives in the USA, until the loss of human lives because of guns in the USA results in the loss of money for large companies as well, nothing will change.
If Sandy Point didn't change anything, nothing will.
It's just rinse and repeat, doesn't even register with most people unless it's more than 10 dead. Eventually that will become to common place and the new "give a ****" number will be 20.
It was Sandy Hook. don't forget it as that was the turning point for the US.
It is and has been a 3rd world kyithole country since then.effing ridiculous.

I was thinking of this when the whole debt ceiling thing was happening. They know there is a problem. They know the solution to the problem. But if they keep raising the bar, they can just pretend like it's not there.

When you talk about the rules that allow the debt ceiling fight every few years or for gun control legislation to fail in becoming law...you're really talking about the American government's checks and balances approach.
Changing the rules to stop both from occurring means that in a two party system the minority party has to give up their ability to force a majority government to the table.
They're not dumb for not wanting to change things in my opinion, they're playing with the rules they have.

Nope. We're at a point where most people in that country will just find a narrative that suits what they believe, not matter what happens. If a congressman who loves guns had a family member killed in a mass shooting, I guarantee you they'd believe that the issue was not guns and in fact would probably advocate that more guns/looser restrictions would have saved their family member.

I don't think that's accurate. Fox News poll from April 2023. Error margin is supposed to be +/- 3%
Quote:
87% of voters surveyed said they support requiring criminal background checks for all gun buyers.
77% support requiring a 30-day waiting period for all gun purchases.
Vast majorities also support raising the legal age to buy guns to 21 (81%) and requiring mental health checks for all gun purchasers (80%).
80% of voters say police should be allowed take guns away from people considered a danger to themselves or others.
61% of voters support banning assault rifles and semi-automatic weapons.
Just over half of voters surveyed (51%) said that they worry that they or their loved ones could be victims of gun violence.
^^^The voters surveyed don't have their pockets lined by the gun lobbyists.
Shameful greed, I hope everyone of them have mental health problems and misery later in life when reminded of the thousands of kids that have died due to their inactions.

Almost everywhere it's below 21... hell some States are patting themselves on the backs for their gun safety for not letting anyone below 21 buy assault rifles... what a country.
A 2-year-old boy fatally shot his pregnant mother in Ohio
Police received a call just after 1 p.m. on June 16 from the 31-year-old mother, who said she was “shot in the back by her 2-year-old son,” according to a news release from the Norwalk Police Department.
The mother was transported to a medical center where an emergency C-section was performed. The unborn son was later pronounced dead, followed by the mother.
