Alberta's education minister is directing school boards to pause a government order to remove books with explicit sexual content from libraries.

Demetrios Nicolaides says in an email to school divisions and officials that they should pause any development or distribution of lists of books that are to be removed.

He says the pause is in effect until further notice.

Name should be reflective of the part of the political spectrum they represent in my opinion.

Alberta Centrist Party, or something along those lines. The vast majority of voters don't have any idea who or what they are voting for. Giving them some information in the name can't hurt.

Kudos to the Edmonton school board for going all out with their list, which made the UCP look even more ridiculous. What a bunch of clowns running this province. To think, there's still people who freely advertise their support of this circus.

This makes me wonder what other laws and policies we are all allowed/supposed to infer intent, rather than what is written down.

Like I know I'm supposed to play taxes, but like...maybe I'm not. Surely a government that says they are focused on affordability would want me to presume what is reasonable, and only pay that much tax.

And there it is, the party of small government, fiscal responsibility, and red tape reduction everyone.

This pause is completely in line with the UCP- recklessly introduce stupid policy, blame others when it doesn’t work, then backpedal. It’s a complete waste of resources. Teachers and administration wasted hours of their planning time reading up on the ministerial order, moved books out of their classrooms, and created parent correspondence resources. Even my work as a curriculum specialist is halted because my bosses are so busy with dealing with all the publicity this book ban generated.

This isn’t the first time UCP did this with education. They scrapped the PC launched new curriculum which was already piloted, rammed a new curriculum containing more American history than Canadian in it, and then had to backpedal because people got pissed. They introduced the new curriculum since year 1 and literally just released a new iteration of the social studies curriculum THIS YEAR. 6 years worth of money diverted from classrooms into making and remaking a sh#tty new social studies curriculum when a previous, much better iteration was already completed and piloted. All this over an imaginary ideological war against the NDP (who didn’t even launch the previously proposed new curriculum). Meanwhile, every time they change their minds about curriculum, we have to reread every word and remake resources for teachers. I have never seen a more incompetent government in Alberta. And yet conservatives will keep voting for them because of their apparent “fiscal responsibility” and “reducing red tape” #### right off.
