Are contracts insurance for mental illness? If insurance I’d offer Kylington 5yrs @ $4.5mm avv.
Lock him up. He’s a bonafide top 4 d

And as I mentioned, he needs to play a year with as little stress hanging over him as possible. Another big ticket, long term deal may not be what he needs.

A way of protecting the Flames would to have games played bonuses. He can still get paid, but needs to play. Win - Win in my mind
Edit: Say 2M/yr plus bonuses for games played as a framework. Each year could have a larger bonus (1st year $500K for 70 games, 2nd year $1M for 70 games, 3rd year $1.5 for 70 games and so on for the length. Year 8 would be $2M bases and $4M in bonuses. AAV would be $4M)

Unfortunately, the CBA doesn't allow it. Unless they changed the rules significantly in the last revision:
Performance bonuses (including for games played) are allowed on 35+ contracts, but Kylington isn't old enough. They're allowed for players with 400+ games played who are coming back from major injuries, but he hasn't played enough games. And they're allowed for entry-level contracts, which obviously doesn't apply.
It's a good idea, if it wasn't against the rules.

I meant as far as paying out the contract not the cap hit Some high end ones are insured for injury

Also a good idea in theory. But when a player has a history of injuries that are liable to recur, it's pretty much impossible to get insurance for that. Just guessing, but I imagine a major mental health issue would fall in that category.

It's all becoming clear.
The Flaming Devils are conspiring to bring the Stanley Cup to New Jersey and then Calgary.
Devils taking MacDermid off the Avs gives Colorado $2,637,500 in cap-space
Hanifin at 50% is $2.475M.

2 games back with 23 to play, and no one else between them
and the Devils are a better team - get a goalie and they're in

This could actually work out just right for all 3 teams in this scenario. Would be a good fit.

If the NHL decides to contract to 16 teams by merging the existing franchises, the Flaming Devils should absolutely be a thing.
Along with the Jet Flyers, the Maple Leaf Avalanche, and of course, the Buffalo Wings.
