I mean both Alberta teams missed the playoffs for 5 years straight starting in 2010 and still managed "perfect" attendance over that period. I got my season tickets around that time. The numbers in Edmonton were obviously fudged, but the building was still pretty full most nights despite a bad product on the ice. $100 dollar oil and a loonie on par with the greenback just might have been behind it.

That makes sense. Sports teams will always be subject to the social and economic climates of their cities. As disposable income increases so does the desire for spending more. I wonder how the wide availability of televised sports, large HD tvs and high ticket prices mess with that obviously simple correlation. Those that can spend on tickets now are perhaps still staying away because they can see the game on tv at home on their couch.
It was obvious to many that the flames were not doing well for quite a long time in the 1990s. I don’t have a specific memory of the oilers having similar issues. However I still think that the salary cap has made it at least more possible for Canadian teams to compete, even if the competition is not exactly equal.

Elias Lindholm says he’s still open to extending in Calgary.
“I’ve been pretty clear I’m willing to stay, that’s about it.” #Flames

Francis needs Elias not to re-sign so he can say 'told you so'.
Salim is also usually a glass half empty kinda dude, so the dichotomy is even funnier haha

Francis stating the obvious that you don't even need to be close to the team to know doesn't make him reliable or someone who is getting things right.
If Backlund signed he would be captain but because he wont it will be Andersson. Thanks tips.

His response here is definitely better than in April, but I don't think it's super positive either.

TBF everything Lindholm says comes across aloof or low key. Just his nature.

Was just curious (pardon me if there is a thread about this already), about Flames fans' predictions on the upcoming UFA's. IMO:
1: Hanifin - dealt at the deadline
2: Backlund - dealt at the deadline
3: Lindholm - re-signs in Calgary
4: Kylington - re-signs in Calgary
5: Zadorov - re-signs in Calgary
6: Tanev - stays in Calgary for the year. Signs with another team in free agency.

seems about right except I think Hanifin might go earlier and Tanev could also be moved.

Wasn't the information from a few months ago from Friedman that Hanifin said he wanted to go back to the United States? Not sure if that is true or not but I remember hearing/reading that article.

Without seeing the interview its pretty hard to really breakdown that comment.
Just like with anything they are likely taking a small quote out of a long ranging interview and using it to get hits on their twitter account.

Green text? No way Calgary lets all those guys (especially the first 3) walk away for nothing after what happened last summer. If they aren't signed by March 8, they will be dealt.

Population too.
In 1991 Calgary had a population of just over 700k. By 2011, it was 1.1 million. Now it's about 1.4 million with a metro area of almost 1.7 million. The Saddledome didn't get any bigger.
On top of that you've got far more major companies in the city, and many are buying tickets.

If those guys leave, then the team will sign other UFAs with their money. Cap space is just as much of an assets as any vet player.
I see Lindholm re-signed, once the year starts and both sides get a better idea of what he actually brings. The gap there is that Lindholm's cap views Lindholm as a 40 goal PPG 1st line 2 way center, but last year's numbers don't jive with that.
If the choice is making a better playoff run and trading Backlund/Hanifin for a pair of late 1sts/2nd round picks, then the team is choosing playoff run. You let Backlund test the UFA market, and realize that no one is offering a 4 year deal. Hanifin you try and work a reasonable deal with.
