Has anyone done this? Does it actually help?

I have never been able to justify AC at home for the heat in this climate, but the smoke might be the tipping point. It definitely isn't just a "one smoky summer" thing at this point.
My wife works at an air filter company and they don't recommend this. Filtering smoke in a home set-up is nearly impossible and using a filter that doesn't allow proper airflow for your unit greatly increases the risk of damage. Basically the short term gain is extremely minimal and you are risking potentially substantial damage.

You can't judge the air flow resistance of a filter by it's MPR or MERV rating alone. The construction of the filter is actually more important, and more expensive filters will typically have a much larger surface area for the air to pass through by virtue of having more pleats inside the filter. 3M's MERV13 filter actually has better airflow than it's budget version.

My office is smokey and I've had a headache all day.

Is the best bet at home to just turn off all HVAC (furnace, HRV, AC)? Maybe some stuffy air to deal with, but better than smokey probably.

Yeah this is pretty intense. The smell is more pervasive than it was from the summer bc smoke.

NASA could find a patch of sand in Calgary this morning and simulate a Mars colony.

Our house smelled like crap in the morning, I tried turning on the furnace fan to see if it would help and it significantly improved the smell at least

It’s odd that Calgary’s air-quality index is double that of the Edmonton region, and that smoke from western Canadian fires is reported to have made its way to the Maritimes. I’m reading of smoke in Ohio although I don’t know the source.

Dubious! The wind remains from the north until midnight Wednesday, so I don't really know how they can expect the smoke to improve that much. I call balderdash, and wait to be vindicated later.

Use a MERV but for The love of God don't leave that in your furnace longer than necessary.

They destroy furnace motors and motors have jumped in price 75,%- 100,% ,since covid.

All I do is replace motors on 3M filter lovers.

Also.....unrelated but wow this wind is insane....after this wind and smoke shuts it down I'll be the best tasting brisket you ever tasted.

Come on Oiler tears ....we need some of moisture where it's needed up north close to you !@#offs.

I've said this so many times I am starting to feel like a salesperson but everyone needs to get the cheapest fiberglass breathable air filters for their furnace and avoid the 3M ones other than for a short duration. Source - used 3M filters on my furnace and the motor went
