What Albertans want from the provincial govt...healthcare, education, affordability
How the govt responds... you will get private sports betting and internet gambling instead (enabled by ucp lobbyists)
https://theijf.org/gambling-companie...uence-campaign
Private gaming companies and industry groups have waged a years-long lobbying campaign to shape Alberta’s regulated internet gaming and sports betting strategy, including hiring several consultants with ties to the United Conservative government, the Investigative Journalism Foundation has found.
Alberta is expected to launch its iGaming market early next year, making it the second province where residents can legally gamble online and place bets with private operators. Provincial records show that since 2020, at least 21 different gambling companies and industry associations registered to guide, inform and educate various government ministries on online betting regulation and market frameworks.

The UCP in Alberta have quietly announced a ban on covid vaccination for most kids under 12, please report on this and do anything you can to stop it. They have revised to a two phase rollout, neither of which make kids without severe medical eligible for vaccination.

What's that? You thought you could still buy your kid a covid vaccine? hahahahaha. under 12 and not vulnerable enough? No. #### you! Hope your job has a good sick day policy.
I sure wish politicians could be charged for harmful acts against their citizens, if it's done solely because they are ####ing morons.

One of the few things we agree on. Kids are full of germs and disease and dealing with their illnesses can be a full time job sometimes. Having workplace flexibility or a stay at home parent is a huge benefit.
On a related topic to kids, has anyone heard any recent updates on the teachers contract negotiations and potential strike action? Are they coming back to school next month or is it trending towards a strike?

It is amazing how much the UCP hates and is willing to harm kids.
With the new studies coming out linking COVID to brain damage, cancer cell activation, and weakening your immune system to make other illnesses impact you harder... it makes me sad that people cannot rally enough to protect kids.
The HVAC in schools needs to be upgraded and modernized, vaccines should be given out at schools so it is easier on parents, and masking should be encouraged for anyone showing any kind of symptom (or better yet, stay home). Anything less than that is just using kids as a meat shield to "win" in a culture war.
Going to BC to get free vaccines (that are then billed back to the GoA) seems like the way to go. Anyone who has the ability to take a day trip out to BC for a shot should do so so that the limited supply of vaccines in Alberta can go to people unable to travel for it.

Strike. The government hasn't made any real efforts to avoid the strike and they will likely let it happen and then try and blame the teachers for the impacts to parent's lives.
The teachers will probably start the school year, let everyone get a little familiar with their new rooms and teachers so that kids will know where to go when the strike ends, and then call the strike. I believe the rules of their vote to strike is that they have 6 months to start the strike after the union voted (mid October is the deadline to start).

If only there were some simple affordable steps you could take to reduce the impact of diseases that lead to sick days, hospital expenses, and economic and productivity impacts. Oh well! Some ####ing daft #### doesn't think we should have that choice.
Now I guess I'll have to work even harder to stay away the little disease balls. Nothing like needing more social isolation to protect vulnerable people. Best they just never go outside again. Mental health isn't really part of healthcare anyway.

Someone told me the government plans to lock teachers out August 28. Not sure how reliable that info is.

Holy crap, I encourage everyone to read both of these links. Disabilities often drastically affect the ability of those to get the write paperwork done, and medical forms can cost hundreds of dollars to have filled out. This is cruelty wrapped in evil dunked in hatred of the unfortunate. #### the UCP, and #### every last mother####ing one of you that still support the UCP. Ya, that's you too, #######.

The UCP trying so hard to destroy this province so their buddies can swoop in and pick up the pieces for their own profit. And people will still keep voting for them, because it's the Alberta way.

They voted to strike back in May and have 120 days to call the strike, which will be sometime in early September.
The vote got the government back to the table and they've been having mediation sessions throughout the summer. Right now, they're in the final round of "Enhanced Mediation", with three more sessions scheduled this week. If they don't have something to bring to their members by Friday, they'll likely be going on strike shortly after.

Canada's measles case count has passed 4,500, with the western province of Alberta -- which has about five million people -- recording more cases this year than the United States.
Alberta's government, which releases its weekly figures on Thursdays, said it had registered 1,790 cases, making it the hardest-hit area per capita.

Shared this on Reddit but adding it here too: if you have a BC Personal Health Number (ie: if you’ve ever lived there or been admitted to a BC hospital — yay, appendix), you can just sign up to get your vaccine boosters there and it’s free like every other sane jurisdiction. I have to imagine you could probably do the same in other provinces too. Doesn’t make sense for one person alone to travel there just to save the $100, but if you already have a reason you’re visiting, it’s an easy way to get it. For a family of four, you're saving $300 if it costs $100 in fuel to get to the nearest border community with appointments open.
I got my third shot in Vernon while Alberta was still deciding whether they’d let enough doses expire before opening up third-dose availability.
Hell, I bet I still have the ability to get it in Manitoba, too.
