"Meridian" instead of "Median"

"Common" instead of "come on"

Regardless of how anybody pronounces anything, if you use the wrong word to name or denote an object or activity I will continue to either:

a) Question or correct you in efforts to stamp out stupidity and ignorance or
b) quietly write the person off as uneducated, ignorant or oblivious.

People judge you by what you say/type despite how you may feel about it.

"It's a doggie dog world."

I nearly put my face through a table when I hear that. I asked if she meant, "It's a Snoop Dog world?" I eventually told the correct phrase and its meaning.

About 2 minutes ago I heard the guy on 660am radio, when discussing the shooting in Vancouver that left 10 injured, say that police are unsure if all 10 people are involved in the gang related shooting or if they are innocent bystandards.

As opposed to "bystanders".

Why is it that the English names for countries are almost never the actual name of the country. Does every language do this?

I think so. I think we anglicize them to make them easier to say. Some are kind of trivial though. Rome vs Roma. Why not just call it Roma? Although that doesn't really answer your question.

I could see doing it for languages that don't translate well to English like Cantonese or something but for "western" languages I find it a bit strange a lot of times.

Do people in China call Canada, Canada or do they translate it? Pretty sure they translate it to their own word.

I've had a few debates with friends about names. I maintain that my name is my name no matter where I am. They often maintain that if your name is let's say Cecil, when you go to a foreign country your name is translated into their native tongue. I totally disagree. My name is Cecil no matter what language you're speaking.

Most countries are phonetically pronounced. Canada, in cantonese is (pardon my Chinglish) "ga-la-dai-". In mandarin it's "jia-na-da". It's kind of like when English calls it "Hong Kong" or "Beijing". It's just phonetically similar in sound but doesn't actually mean anything in that language.
