But he's young, still has some time, the AHL is still a developmental league so we'll see if he can rise up to the expectations of an NHL player.

My biggest fear is he will look like Bryan Cameron did this year, but Cameron isn't a good skater and doesn't really play with a chip on his shoulder. From what I have heard Howse can skate and isn't afraid to mix it up, those are 2 things that will definitely work in his favor. Howse is definitely boom or bust and has tendency to be unimpressive without the puck, but then again that is also the perfect description of Brett Hull

It would be sweet if the Flames drafted a Brett Hull!

Sidenote, talking with Greg Drinnan (local WHL scribe who's been around the block a tonne and is highly regarded by guys like Bob Mckenzie, etc), he says watching Ryan is like watching a lot of other talented guys who disappear for long stretches. He doesn't think Ryan will make it either

He's still 19.
He has tons of time to develop and mature if these things are true.
Im not worried about him.

No kidding, the guy has no business being a head coach of a junior team making remarks like that....

If Ryan Howse has been unmotivated up to this point, it means he can take his game to another level if he ever finds proper motivation. I'd rather have immature and talented coming through the system instead of mature and untalented. Part of development is working with players strengths and weaknesses to make them better players. A simplistic policy of casting away anyone with motivation issues is a recipe for disaster for any development program.
The license comment is irrelevant really as it can come from a lot of places. Fear, apathy, doesn't like to drive etc. Nothing to do with how he plays hockey.

Or trade him for a couple of big keys to winning the Stanley Cup, like they did the last time.

Who really knows what is in this kid's head? We can speculate about him being a bust due to his attitude, or he may just have been in a bad situation/time. Perhaps him and his coach just didn't gel at all, and he just 'toughed it out' or something. Who knows?
I am interested to see what happens in his next step. I am sure there will be a lot of eyes on him this fall.

He must be doing something right with a Stanley Cup and Olympic Gold Medal.

Getzlaf was in the right situation with the Ducks - playing on a tough team that suited his skillset and finding magic with Corey Perry
There's no way all the pieces will fall in place like that for Howse, and the Flames' history with developing boom/bust prospects isn't good. If Howse is as one dimensional as people say, he's got no chance of Sutter liking him and playing him. Look what it took to get Backlund playing on the pp and top line...and Backlund is/was considered a more well-rounded, higher skilled prospect

Take a chill pill. Howse is a couple of years away from making the team anyway. Lets see what he does in the AHL before we label boom/bust tag on the kid.

I didn't say he wasn't skilled, I just said he wasn't motivated. I think he's one of those players whose made an impact without every really having to give his all, just natural talent. If he was motivated I think he could be twice the player. Kind of like Joe Thorton, great player but just won't push himself to the next level. To laid back.

Who gives a flip if he hasn't gotten his license? Is that really important or meaningful in any way?

All the more bizarre is why anyone would come on here and quote Habby!
|
what dumb things did he say? he had nothing but praise for Chiliwack, so he admitted the players knew but decided to try and ignore it and focus on the playoffs. sounds to me like he said all the right things in that segment. and also i would guess the PG media went to him and not vice versa.

As someone who has made a decision not to drive for medical reasons I can say for certain that in the grand scope people who do not drive are looked down upon by the majority of people. I think it stems from people equating driving to having freedom,

I guess. I don't drive, primarily because I live in Toronto and it's more of a pain to drive than to bike and/or take public transit, but I've never felt the overwhelming urge to get a license. I've never been looked down upon for it. Maybe it has to do with where you live.
Bizarre thing for someone's coach to say either way.

oh where I live is a big part of it, like you said its easier not to drive in bigger cities but I live in a city of approximately 90k and its a huge issue. I would think its like that in other smaller cities with less developed public transport as well. I've never been to Chiliwack myself but if public transport is as bad as Lethbridge it will be seen by many as a character flaw
