City of Calgary
5:33 PM MDT Sunday 08 August 2010
Severe thunderstorm watch for
City of Calgary continued

Severe thunderstorms possible this evening.

This is an alert to the potential development of severe thunderstorms with large hail and damaging winds.

Monitor weather conditions..Listen for updated statements. If threatening weather approaches take immediate safety precautions.

Widespread thunderstorms are occurring over eastern portions of Alberta this evening as a humid airmass remains in place. Some of these storms may become severe in the hann - Coronation - Oyen region. In addition, thunderstorms developing along the foothills have the potential to become severe this evening. The main threats with these storms will be locally heavy downpours, large hail and strong wind gusts.
Looking at the radar, there is a cell west of the city tracking this way. It may be an hour out. It's not too bad right now, but may grow by the time it gets here.

*Of course it may miss the city altogether*

I'm kinda getting sick of all the thunderstorm warnings.

Almost every day in our area, and yet nothing happens.

There's a good sized one moving over Rocky Mountain House in a SE direction. Impossible to guess how it could track, right now it looks like it would miss Calgary. These cells seem to pop up very quickly though and seemingly out of nowhere at times.

No kidding. A red warning screen on the weather channel means nothing anymore. It's meaningless, they just do it for ratings. It's the best way to get people to watch (well people that haven't fallen for it yet).

Why do you think they have breaking news on CNN every 10 minutes.

Wow a tornado warning, this time it must really be happening. Sure.

The only people who criticize the watch/warning system are those who have a very elementary understanding of weather and/or the watch/warning system.

Sick of the warnings? Most of the alerts this year have been watches, not warnings.

The watches for the City of Calgary have been very excessive this year. They pretty much just plunk Calgary in the watches when a community surrounding may be under a watch as well. Now I just expecting nothing to happen unless Calgary is right dab in the middle of a watch area.

Are you complaining about excessive watches? Each of the watches released were proper IMO. A watch doesn't mean something will happen, only that it's possible something MAY happen. I think you had too high of expectations for a watch.

Here are the criteria used for the various alerts.

I understand why they're put out. But it literally feels like every single day there is a watch. I don't think there have been this many watches ever. When most of these stroms bypass Calgary, makes for uneventful days weatherwise.

Give me rain, or else give me clear blue sunny skies with no worries of weather being a inconvenience.

Well as someone who works outside, it probably has something to do with the fact that every single day it rains in the evening, and the ones it doesn't it sure looks like it might. Damn AGW.

I'm stuck at the airport cuz the flight I was waiting to arrive wasn't allowed to land and they had to go to Lethbridge to refuel. Now I'm looking at a two hour wait for them to land. Ugh.

Agreed. Summers used to be a bright spot here. But when summer sucks for half of it and winter REALLY sucks, what's the point?

Well, I have lived here for a long time and I figure we have it pretty good.

We get hot weather (most summers) interspersed with wicked thunderstorms.

The winters are interrupted frequently by chinooks and we never get the sustained extreme weather that the rest of the prairies get.

The only real better option in Canada than Calgary is the west coast and that's where the evil Canucks reside. Can't move there.

This is how I remember summers. Warm days, thunderstorms in the evening. June is always soaking wet too.

It did seem a little wetter than normal in July, but so far in August it seems spot on. Just my observation though, and I actually like rain, so maybe I don't notice it because I don't mind it too much.

That was bad up there! I saw big white clumps floating down the stream west of Deerfoot and the clumps were big hail islands floating down the stream. The hail didn't seem very big though. Only about pea sized. It only lasted about 20 minutes and then it was hot and sunny again.
