Looks like RIM semi-caved. Setting up servers in saudi arabia so the government can monitor them.
Quote:
It took two long years for India to (allegedly) tap BlackBerry traffic, but Saudi Arabia may not have to wait nearly as long; the Wall Street Journal reports that RIM has all but agreed to set up a local server in the country

Wonder if other countries start doing this as well.

I purchased my blackberry at Costco on Friday night. Great deal (included a $100.00 costco cash card).
A couple of questions:
When I call anyone who has call display, it says "Out of Area". How do I get my name to show up?
Q2: I thought they all came with a standard small little case thing. This didn't. Are they supposed to come with one? The one i had before did.

A1: Just call customer service for your provider (usually *611 on the phone itself) and they can fix that for you (sounds like a lazy sales person who just didn't want to put your name into the field for caller ID)
A2: I believe just the Bolds come with cases, I don't believe the Curves do, but I could be mistaken (been a while since I sold cell phones). However you do have a $100 Costco Card which could potentially be used for a case

the thing with the cases though, is that i HATE the huge cases that clip onto belts. I want a small, skinny case that will cover the screen while I'm not using it.

Then you'll have to buy a third party one. I did. The one that came with my Bold was the clip on holster that only old guys use. Not interested...and I'm an old guy.
Edit: The one I bought does not cover the screen, but does a nice job of protecting my Bold from scratches, etc.:

I am with you about hating the case that clips on to your belt. Check out the phone booth as they have several different cases for the 9700.

I love the leather sleeve my Storm 2 came with. Don't most BB's come with a leather case?

Yes but the cases they provide are the ones that clip onto your belt or waist. Not that I am complaining about them throwing in something extra but no need for me, maybe others.

Mines just a sleeve without the clip on part. I'd never wear one of those on my belt.

I tried that belt case for about 1 minute and I felt like a complete tool. Just feels awkward to wear. Bought a sweet case at the phone booth and my 9700 still fits nicely in my jean pockets.

Check out this review at Crackberry on the Epik case for the Tour, not sure if they make these cases for the newer BB's or not (if they don't they should). Got mine on ebay for like $5 from Hong Kong.

Ok so I am stuck between getting the Storm 2 or the Torch... what are your guys opinions on either or?
The Torch isn't here yet.. so if I wanted to get a new phone tomorrow it would have to be the Storm, but I can wait if I think it is worth waiting for.
I do enjoy the key pad though, not a fan of greasy finger streaks all over my phone from too much texting.

^^ - So why not get the 9700 then? If you want a touch screen, then wait for the 9800. If you don't care about the touch screen, get a Bold 9700. The 9800 will come with OS6, while the 9700 will be getting OS6.

To read TechCrunch, you’d think that Apple vs Android was the only fight in town. This past week, MG got infuriated by reports that Android handsets had overtaken Apple offerings for the first time – pointing out that it’s hardly surprising that 20 Phones on 4 Carriers Outsold 1 Phone On 1 Carrier. Erick weighed in too, noting that the numbers omitted the iPhone 4.
Both of my esteemed colleagues, though, all-but-overlooked one other stat (Erick mentioned it in parentheses): Blackberry handsets outsold them all – both in terms of current user base and new users, with 33% of recent purchasers picking up a Blackberry compared to 27% for Android and 23% for iPhone.
With numbers like those my choice to go back to Blackberry actually makes me look like a sheep. And yet to read TechCrunch of late, you’d think that to consider both iPhone and Android and choose neither is the boldest possible act of techno-contrarianism.

Maybe RIM isn't going belly up just yet.

Yup. Doesn't seem as grim as all the Apple and Android owner like to make it out as being huh?

I'm having issues with my bb. The radio turns off every 20 seconds or so. The battery is fully charged. I took it in to telus, and they said its a hardware failure, and they can't do anything. The BB forums say its a known issue too. Has anyone else had this problem?

Seriously, who cares which company is doing better than the others?
I don't care who else uses the phone I have, as long as it does what I want for a reasonable price.
When I get another phone next year I will look at 2 things: Cost and the function of the phone. Market share of the OS/Manufacturer is something that really means next to nothing for me. The only relevance is as long as the company doesn't go under in the 2-3 years I expect to have the phone. As grim as things might be for any company (other than maybe Palm), chances are none of these companies are going to stop making cellphones/OS in the time it will matter.

Had an idea!
|
If I couldn't get an Android phone, and the choice was between the BB and the iPhone 4, I would almost certainly take the Bold 9700. Even if I didn't have a problem with Apple or some of their policies I would take the 9700. I've had my Milestone for about 8 months now, and I realize I don't use the majority of the apps. I text, email and phone.
But, I think the biggest thing is the sleek design of the BB. I just like the feel of it better.

True. But then what would we argue about?

Yup. That's what I realized when I had my iPhone. I had a lot of apps, used them once and they just sat there. I used the phone for texting, email and actual calls.
The 9700 does all of those things better for me and I like the smaller size, real keyboard and the fact that I can type faster, get my email faster and not to mention BBM that I use all the time and of course could not use on the iPhone.
The other thing I have since noticed is my GPS works so much better with the Bold than it ever did with my iPhone. People used to think I was talking in a tunnel and I could barely hear them with my GPS speaker turned up all the way, while using BT with my iPhone. Now, with the 9700, I actually had to turn the GPS speaker down. It is loud, clear and the people on the other side say it sounds like a real phone call now.
