So.... an tethered jailbreak for 5.01. Is there a safe place to download?

So I'm looking to jailbreak and unlock my phone in advance of an upcoming trip in February (sounds a lot like my post a year ago).
I have now entered the world of the iPhone 4s, which is marvellous, but I still have my old 3G that would make an ideal travel phone that I can tinker with that won't require me upsetting my 4s. Arrive in the UK, drop a sim in there, and I should be good to go. Meanwhile my non-jailbroken 4s can remain with me to receive texts and missed calls and not cost me anything to operate (as long as I don't answer calls). All sent texts and phone calls will be made with my unlocked 3G with a UK sim.
- Does anyone have any experience using a foreign sim in an iPhone? Pros and cons?
- Would you bother jailbreaking and unlocking the 3g with a perfectly good 4s that could be jailbroken and unlocked instead?
- What method/software would you recommend for jailbreaking and unlocking a 3g with the "latest" software on it (4.2.1)?

^ Thanks for the reply. The only place where you've lost me is with the software version. Does this mean that my 3G will be updated to 5.0.1 (which would probably kill it because it can barely handle 4.2.1), or will the software know that my 3G can only handle a certain generation of software? Or... are those instructions more applicable if I was going to go do this to my 4s eventually? Sorry for being a noob/wimp with this sort of thing!

3G can't be updated to iOS 5. So eventually as apps require iOS5 they'll stop working on the 3G. I think 4.3.5 was the last 4.x version that'll go on a 3G.
4S hasn't been jailbroken yet.

^ Thanks for the clarification. I'm not too concerned about apps as I'll simply be using it as a travel phone. Phone calls, texting, and maybe a little bit of internet if I can find a pay-as-you-go option in the UK that gives me all of that cheaply. I'll keep my 4s for the fun stuff, which will also be with me.
I'll have a look at my 3g when I get home regarding the baseband version, and if everything looks good, I may attempt to jailbreak and unlock tonight or this weekend.

It could barely do 4.0. Thanks for the info and I am initiating the jailbreak process as we speak.

Holy crap this might be the app that fixes my biggest complaint about iDevices; lack of user profiles!
I wonder if it's truly separate (i.e. each can have a different config and everything)...
Might have to re-jailbreak my iPad to try this.

So how long can I expect an old 3G to take to reboot after jailbreaking? I followed the steps with Redsnow, everything seemed to install correctly, and after the "everything else will take place on your phone" message, it reboots and sits there with the apple logo and the little swirly circle thing. But the little circle is not moving to indicate that it is "working".
Going on 15 minutes now, which is about how long it took last time before I gave up and started over.

^ To answer my own question: switched to my Mac and about 2 minutes. Not sure why Windows 7 didn't like it, even when running in XP compatibility mode and as an administrator.

Heads up, the jailbreak for 5 and 5.0.1 are out for A5 devices (4S and iPad2)
Currently only the mac tool is out right now, however, the Windows version should hopefully be out today/tomorrow.

Dumb question... If I need to unlock an iPhone 4with iOS 5, but it's the tethered jailbreak. Can. Put it back to non jail broken state after the unlock and the unlocking will stay?

No the jb is needed for the unlock. I think you can make it untethered though

I dunno we bought an iPhone for my wife thinking it was unlocked and it's still locked to bell. I am new to iPhones and don't feel comfortable doing any of the unlocking myself....
Maybe just sell it as a bell phone and buy a proper one...

IMO that's the best bet, sell it and then buy a factory unlocked iPhone. When buying a factory unlocked one I suggest asking for a receipt, as it will show full price and sim free I believe.

A couple of weeks ago I did the jailbreak on my old 3G (thanks for all of the information that this thread provided). I have since tested it with a friend's sim from another network, and everything looks to be working nicely and ready for my jaunt to the UK.
Pay-as-you-go voice, text, and data plans are pretty affordable there, so I will likely end up with a nice little package for the three weeks that I am there.
Question: Is it possible to somehow tether my jailbroken 3G (and its eventual UK data plan) using bluetooth or wifi to my iPhone 4s (which is my main phone that is not jailbroken)? The 3G was pre-personal hotspot, otherwise that would be the easy solution. You can obviously tether to a computer using the cord or bluetooth, but I'm not sure if it can be done from phone to phone. Particularly the 3G to 4s.

You'd have to download one of the hotspot type programs from Cydia. Or at least they used to have them, not sure if they do anymore.

So I have a 3GS on iOS 5.0.1. I checked my modem firmware and it looks like I can't jailbreak my phone, unless I'm out to lunch. I have 5.16.05. Can I downgrade this? Essentially I want to unlock my phone for when I go to the US. Roaming charges are insane and the addons from Telus are pretty much a rip off.
