Well bad news. Day 2 of new bike and I went down. Coming up to a corner (just by my house) and was braking, then I caught some gravel and down she went. Was going maybe 35 but didn't matter.

My fault for going over gravel (obviously didn't mean too), but looks like I'll need a front and right side fairing and a new front fender. I also broke the kickstand and bent the clutch pedal. All I can find right now is a complete Fairing kit which is $400, so about $500 to fix the bike.

I'm disappointed, but hopefully my hand will heal up fast and I'll be back next weekend. Not sure how I screwed up my hand (3 of the fingers), but nothing broke. Shoulder took a beating though.

Ah well, was a rough day but I'll be back.

Also, ALWAYS WEAR A HELMET. If I hadn't, my jaw is gone.

That sucks, Justin. Sounds like you're a bit bruised up, but bruises heal. On the good side, I'd never have thought that you could find a fairing kit for $400, so you'll be back at 'er soon enough.

There's a bike wrecker on the east side of the city, can't remember what it's called. It might be a cheap source for a kickstand and clutch lever (if you can't straighten it out).

Shoulder took a beating, and somehow my thumb and 2 fingers got all banged up, but other than that I am fine. More disappointed that I went down, I feel like I let my family down and my friends who ride. Really sucks that my dad had to watch me go down (when he was driving his truck behind me).

Hopefully I'll have her back in proper condition in 2 weeks though, depends when the fairing kit comes. On eBay I can't find my year and colour for single fairings, and when I do they are $200 each shipped, so I'll just a whole new set for $400 shipped from China.

Got to try and think positively at least.

Everyone crashes, I can't count how many times I've dumped my dirtbike, sometimes in embarassing circumstances. I havent rode my new R6 yet, still waiting for the roads to get a bit cleaner in the neighbourhood.

Justin.....congrats on getting your cherry popped! Don't worry mate, happens to all of us. My first (and so far only) wipe out was very similar to yours. Low speed.....brakes.....gravel.....down. Life goes on!

As for the parts.....unless they're uber-rashed (dangerous), maybe hold off on replacing the plastics. There's nothing like learning on a bike that you're "Allowed" to drop. Replace the shifter knob and stand obviously.....safety can't be skimped on.

Just make sure to wear your gear, even if you're only going out for 5 mins...gloves and a jacket at least...

This was travelling about 30-40km/h and to avoid a potential flipping over a hood of a car doing a u turn where they shouldn't have, I dropped and slid. Seemed like the best of the two options at the time, well the 2 seconds I had to decide anyway. Bike wasn't damaged too much, ankle was swollen, rash took a while to heal, that was the worst part.

Live and learn...and ride another day!

So my hand is still healing up, but I am hoping I can get out tomorrow or Sunday depending on how the hand feels.

Anyway, during the crash my helmet didn't impact the ground, it more or less dragged on the ground and scratched it all up. I have to replace the shield no matter what, but what is everyone's opinion on riding with it? Should I go buy another one (which would really suck), or stick it out with this one. I know the rule of "1 crash for 1 helmet", but it doesn't look like it is damaged out side the paint being scraped off.

Would HJC cover it for warranty since I've had it for less than 4 weeks?

I'd post a picture but I don't have it with me right now.

It'd really suck to get spend another $360 on a helmet again.

In my completely non professional opinion, the damage that you can't see from the impact is what might compromise the helmet. I don't know, just some scrapes, it should be ok. But when you fell you might not have realized that you hit your helmet on the ground because you were all of a sudden thrust into a new situation very quickly.

Regarding the helmet, the choice is 100% yours. Motorcycle riding is all about constantly assessing "risk-reward".

I am an "all the gear, all the time" (atgatt) rider, and like to think that I take my safety very seriously (I promised my grandma, all those years ago).

When I had a low-speed crashed, I basically dragged my chin across a foot of pavement. It was a really "Low Impact" event, and the only damage to the helmet was some surface damage (scratches, a couple of nicks) on the front. No cracks or fractures and it fit fine. I opted to keep it for a couple more years (almost it's full life).

I would absolutely have replaced the helmet if I thought my safety was compromised.

I completely agree about the safety, not worth it to go out without full gear.

I'm going to Blackfoot now to buy a new shield for it. I'm going to wear it for the rest of this season, and if I feel comfortable enough I'll wear it next as well. If I don't feel safe this year though I'm going to buy a new one.

It isn't cracked or dented or anything, just scratched up. I'll take a picture of it when I get it in a few hours.

How much impact occurred? That's the thing that does a helmet in. If you hang your helmet off your mirror and it falls to the ground, it probably should be replaced. Almost nobody does in that case, but it probably should be. If you braced yourself with your hands and the helmet didn't hit down very hard, it's probably ok. <--Just an opinion, use your best judgement.

Pics of damage? Sorry to hear about the fall, makes me nervous at the thought of me falling for the first time. I kinda have to find a bike first though haha

Justin.....glad you bought a new lid. Good to see a rider err on the side of safety.

Hi-Psi.....don't worry about falling. As detailed in this thread, EVERYONE wipes at some point. Be street smart, wear as much decent gear as you can afford, and everything will come out fine.

Now go find a bike.....!

Yeah I know it's part of the learning process, it doesn't make me feel any better about it though haha

I've been searching for a bike for 3 weeks now and just can't seem to find something that really peaks my interest. I'm trying not to spend anymore than $4500 for my first bike as I want something I won't be too scared to scratch up as I'm sure I will. Unfortunately in that price range the pickings are pretty thin.
