Played a multiplayer game last night. It was pretty fun - basically it's pseudo-simultaneous turns which makes perfect sense for any sort of MP implementation. I thought it was amusing that you cannot save a game in MP though - only autosaves work.
I felt that there were some memory leaks as my game got progressively slower as the game went on, and some bugs (several crashes and disconnects).
The game itself is pretty fun - like some others, I was a bit shocked at how harsh the game penalizes fast expansion, and because of that, I felt like there was a lot of just clicking end turn over and over waiting for improvements to finish, or just researching.
I need to play a lot more with a new strategy or just focus in on policies/techs that enable mass cities, since it was my first game I just went with a mish-mash of stuff.
World domination, ruff putting your friend over the wan, taking pleasure in watching Catherine the Great beg for mercy, being perplexed how archers can take down migs, steam rolling through Japan with China, nuking the aztecs before they nuke you, starting a game on a Saturday morning before going out to get something to eat and then finding out that its 6pm and its time for supper.
I dont know if I can wait till the weekend to play this game. I hope there is a way to remove city states, they sound completely useless. According to the civ podcast there are 2 for every player.
In the advanced settings before starting a game you can choose to not have city states or increase/decrease the number of them. It has all of the classic options too like no ruins (villages), no barbarians, aggressive barbarians, that kinda stuff.

Listening to that Baba Yetu song didn't really get me going, but reading this got my fully wired to play. Time to ditch all responsibilities and get my game on.
Played a neat game where there was a whole continent hidden for half the game because it was over ocean tiles, finally got there and there's barbarians there with Riflemen! I sent over one of my two Riflemen I had at the time with some lower units and they got wiped out by all the rifle wielding barbarians. wtf..
Artists are my new favorite great persons, they have a culture bomb ability where you set it off and all the tiles around them become part of your civ, as long as they are on or next to your territory and not on enemy territory. Did that to one civ last night eating up a bunch of his territory to get some resources.. He said "If you are trying to start a war you are doing a good job of it." lol.
Not sure I like the whole Civil Policies thing.. or rather I do like it, but it seemed to go slow, I had only unlocked like 6 or 7 options by the time I won a domination victory.. on an admittedly small map, but still.
The music is completely uninteresting and even annoying sometimes, glad I didn't pop for the version with the soundtrack.
Maybe I didn't get friendly enough with city states, but I never had the option to actually trade with them, and the friendship decayed extremely fast, so I just ignored them. "Stockholm wants a Great Engineer", good for Stockholm.
Not sure if it was because I started off at Chieftain, but still not overly impressed with the AI. Build up an army of tanks and mechanized infantry and artillery, park it off the border of a country (who definitely notices since they build up too, with their crossbowmen), contact them and demand 10 gold and they say no?
Not until I had taken all but one of their cities did they offer something for peace.

I donated a crap ton of gold to Edinburgh who was a militaristic city-state, got them into allied status, and every 20 turns or so they would gift a military unit to me which was pretty awesome.

Interesting. There's things you can do in the Civil Policies to improve things as well.
That brings up something else I'm not sure I like, with the ability to purchase land, units, etc so easily, it seems like focusing on producing lots of gold could be the best basic strategy. I didn't play that way but I got that sense.

I got my copy... probably wait to upload it though as I am in the process of moving right now. I don't know if my wife would like it if I got sucked into that game right now.

Ya, the AI is all over the place. The Indians that we on my continent decided that their 2nd city should be about 20 turns from the capital, right in the middle of 2 of my cities.
I took that city and all of the sudden Ghandi offered me all his his gold, 4 gold/turn, + iron + horses......back in Civ4, Id be lucky if I could get a lump of gold.

I get this sense too - Another thing is the research pacts, where it's like 200-250 (in the earlish game) to get a free tech - which could be something like iron working that would be a 15-20 turn research.
I think you're a sissy if you can't wipe out all your enemies before you discover nukes!
I'm a simple pleasures guy to be honest. I will attack my enemies, drive them from their cities, weaken them, but show mercy and let them survive.
At least until I get nukes, once I get nukes, I gain even more simple pleasures in removing their civilizations from the universe with the holy clensing nuclear fire.
One thing that I do miss out Master or Orion was the options when you took an enemy panet, you could basically integrate them from society or clense them from your planet.

You show more compassion than me.
If I'm having a bad day nothing beats firing up a Pangea map on marathon speed as Caesar. Then spamming praetorians and razing every (non-captial) city in sight. The whole planet will be mine before Jesus even shows up.
