the one thing that struck me about that video was how utterly white Calgary was. the only black people in the entire clip were the traveling band from the Bahamas

Shared this video with my parents who were born a few years before 1962. This was the Calgary that they remember when they were little kids. The recognized most of the restaurants and theatres.

One thing I did not know was that the Stampede Rodeo was in front of the Big 4 building, and was moved over to the grandstand once it was built in the 70's.

Not an old photo, but some history about Barlow Trail and the man it was named after in today's Herald.

Quote:
Barlow Trail has a soaring history

By Juliet Guichon, For The Calgary Herald April 10, 2011 7:34 AM

A section of Barlow Trail has closed permanently and may someday have a tunnel underneath. The man after whom it was named would humbly laugh that his namesake is in the news, but the irony of the road's current status would not be lost on Noel Barlow's friends.

This is because Barlow -a man of the land -had a great ambition: to soar above it. He financed his pilot's training by working underground. One way or another, Barlow would get into the air.

Born on Boxing Day in 1912 to Hannah and William Parry, Barlow hardly knew his father, who died in the Great War. Eventually marrying Richard Barlow, Barlow's mother and family homesteaded in Cessford, Alta.

As a boy on the bald prairie, Barlow saw small aircraft flying overhead and developed his expensive goal -to learn to fly. At 22, he worked in Yellowknife uranium mines for two years and returned with enough money to obtain a commercial pilot's licence at the Calgary Flying Club.

[...]

If Barlow Trail proves anything like the man, then, one way or another, the road will reach the airport.

Pretty cool Reg. Calgary was a pretty happenin' town in 1962!

I wonder where that would have been distributed too back then? Like where would the average person in Toronto or Chicago have viewed it? Tourism conventions and such I suppose?

Ever notice the almost different sounding accents people had in the older films and TV? People actually sounded different....Canadian and American. There was a different tone and accent in media right up to about the mid 70's it seems.

I was wondering that myself. Maybe it was done for the 1962 world's fair (Expo) in Seattle?

Bump.

Found this from the ogden grain elevator story:

http://www.calgaryherald.com/news/to...491/story.html

Just wanted to point out pic 8. There used to be a GRAIN ELEVATOR on 9th Ave. And a not-quite-completed Calgary Tower a little further on!

I’m always amazed these sportscasters and announcers can call the game with McDavid’s **** in their mouths all the time.

Ah, good times. When I was a wee lad, I got picked up by the CPR police for trespassing in behind Robin Hood Mills there. They tried to scare the living crap out of us but they only phoned our parents.

I also remember 'exploring' an empty Hull Manor before it was demolished.

Yes, I'm ancient.

I just threw this together quick as a neat contrast. The above pic is from the link you provided and was taken in 1936.

Look at that extravagant, expensive, out of place, foreign designed, waste of tax payer dollar bridge.
