I don't think I was ever taught it in drivers ed, I just assumed that first one to the stop sign has right of way. Apparently, not always.

So much crazy rage in this thread. I honestly don't understand how you people get through your day. I see so much stupid driving in one day that, given the responses in this thread, would turn most people on this thread into murderous psychotics. I think I used to be pretty crazy like this, but then I grew old and learned that life's too short to fly into such a rage over such insignificant stuff.

And another thing... Nothing annoys me more than a person that accepts crap or mediocrity as status quo. I see enough good driving in a day to get really freaking annoyed by buttsteaks that cannot keep up with the rest of us. Do me a favour and move to the country.

Sorry, this post annoys me so much, I'm going to reply to it twice.

V, what do you do for a living? Does it involve driving, or do you have to get to your office and then get home? Do you spend any of your workday on the road? If you do, I don't believe it. Unless you work by the hour.
Anyone that makes their money by getting things done hates numbnut drivers that dawdle for no reason. Just because you couldn't care less about your arrival time doesn't mean you need to impede my arrival time.
So how about you just take a minute to remember that not everyone is on a Sunday drive. Some of us are actually on our way to your house to fix something. God forbid they take too long because some loser is poking along in the left lane on Deerfoot.

People who think a two-way stop works the same as a four-way stop are definitely a source of annoyance. I always go to the intersection assuming the other person is going to do it wrong and am pleasantly surprised when they don't.

I happen to love these driving threads, I've actually learned some things (and adjusted what I do) from them. Far more useful than many threads on here.

4x4, related to your rant about double lines, the problem of people crossing them actually became so bad in the LA area that they moved to quadruple lines in many cases with those little bumps in them and people STILL don't get it.

Haha, did you just rage on him for commenting on how rageful this thread was?

I'm with V, life's too short to stress over things that are out of YOUR control!

That said, I've yet to figure out how to actually apply this to driving...freakin strugglers!

I know this might not be a lot of help, but I just made a conscious decision one day not to let things in the car infuriate me for this very reason. Eventually I didn't have to think about it anymore. Things annoy me in the car but I try to just let them slide. Doesn't always work though.

Yeah me too. I think this happened after I moved back from Toronto. Seeing their traffic really made me realize that life is too short to stress about driving snags.

Before I took my drivers ed class, I initially thought that at those 2 way stop signs, the person going straight through has the right of way. Then I did it in a parking lot, the woman across from me was going straight so I let her go... I don't understand why she was so insistent that I go first... and my dad sitting next to me tells me to treat those stop signs like a 4 way stop, person to arrive is the first person to go if cross traffic is clear. Apparently... I was right all along according to you Mr. 4x4

This is blowing my mind. Honestly. I'm positive I was taught whoever arrives at the stop sign first has the right of way. I always though people seem really hesitant at 4 way stops, like they don't know what to do. But maybe this is the reason. I took drivers ed here, but maybe in other provinces it's different?

There is a difference between being a Sunday driver and not giving yourself a brain aneurysm every time you get into the drivers seat.

I am cable of driving normally and keeping my cool (most of the time). Just because you are level headed doesn't mean you are a dawdler.

Just to be clear, we're talking about two drivers facing each other with stop signs. Perpendicular to the drivers is a two way road with right of way (no stop signs). One of the stoppedd drivers wants to turn left, and got there first. The other driver wants to go straight through. As soon as traffic allows these two drivers the opportunity to move, which driver has right of way:

driver that got there first
or
the driver going straight through

Easy. The driver going straight through. Interesting that not many people know this.

Yeah, I know. Obviously I take driving way more seriously than most people. Probably because I drive so much. Just because I rant about the stupid things that people do, doesn't mean I'm out there freaking out all day. I just hate stupid people and like to rant about them. Maybe I hope that some of these morons that do stupid things will read my rants and realize that they're strugglers.
I've learned plenty from other peoples' rants here. Hell, I actually bought winter tires this year. I bet if we pull up the thread from last year, I was probably one of the "all seasons are fine" guys.
There's no shame in learning. As soon as people stop doing severely aggravating things like holding up traffic to turn left over a double solid, or poking along in the left lane on deerfoot, or pedesting in front of me when I have a green arrow, I'll stop bitching about it.

BTW, I just invented a word.

However in the real world since most people don't know the simple rules of the road it is whoever reacts first in most cases. I could be sitting at a stop sign all day if I waited for the other party to make up their mind, its pathetic!

People should know these things before you get behind the wheel of a vehicle because they are putting everyone else at danger because they either don't know the rules or don't have the confidence to be on the road.

As much as drinking and driving is illegal so should stupidity and driving.

Another intersting driving law fact. Nowhere in the Alberta trafic act does it say that it is illegal to pass over a single yellow line. At least that's why my driving instructor told me ages ago.

I'm pretty sure it is like that almost anywhere in North America at least, unless otherwise stated.

Broken Line - Safe passing area
Single Line - Pass with caution
Double Line - Do not pass or turn
