Are the 3D effects worth seeing the movie in 3D? I've seen a couple 3D movies before and didn't feel as if it was worth the extra money (Up and Final Destination).

Absolutely. It was the best 3D movie I've seen.

Avatar is not like previous 3D movies.
Avatar was made specifically with 3D in mind and the whole movie is shot in 3D. There were multiple times when I felt like I was right inside the scenes and things were going on around me. It is really cool. Definitely have to see it in 3D.

I would venture to say the movie isn't that worth seeing without the 3D effects. They make the "experience" of the movie.

Stupid story --> Great another metaphor about how bad white people are for ruining the natives culture. LAME. Also very cheesy and almost cartoonish.

the word you are looking for is allegory.
unless the movie was a figure of speech...

3D sucked --> It was cool for about 3 minutes when he was in the chamber at the beginning with the bubbles but then it got really annoying cause whenever they moved quick it just got really blurry and hard to watch
Detached from Characters --> Really didn't feel any connection with the characters what so ever, only sort of emotion I experienced was a strange urge to see the alien chick naked-er, which I didn't know how to react to.
I give it a 5/10. All the points are for the visuals, which I'm sure if it were in normal film, would've been spectacular. Also some points for the 3D when there wasn't rapid movement going as the depth of field did make it seem cool.

To each their own. Not everyone will like what Avatar has to offer.
Thankfully this seems to be limited to about 17% of reviewers and 10% of movie-buffs (citing Rotten Tomatoes).

True that. I'm just really disappointed and need to vent. I had big expectations for this movie as its the last exciting movie (and I guess Sherlock Holmes) that will come out until the end of march.

Sorry you didn't like it man.
It is strange how perceptions differ so much. I loved it and was so happy after to finally see a great movie because in the past couple of months I have gone to some awful movies (2012, Planet 51). I followed that up with Invictus and Avatar which have now completley restored my faith in movies.
Sherlock Holmes will probably be a good movie.
There are a few other possibilites in the coming months (Legion, The Book of Eli, Daybreakers, The Wolfman, Shutter Island, Green Zone).

Saw it in 3D Imax tonight.
Really liked the movie. Tight script, beautiful vistas and visuals, and amazing sound. The sound will get overlooked because of all of the 3D and computer graphics but wow, I was blown away by the imax sound. So chunky and crisp all around you.

I didn't see 2012, so the last blockbuster type of movie I had to compare Avatar was probably District 9 which blew my mind.
The Eli one with Denzel looks good same with Green Zone (Bourne movies are my favorite action movies so this should be good). Shutter Island looks to messed up for me to enjoy.

Imax probably would've made the 3d better. It was soo blurry when there was action scenes going on.

Watched it today...Imax 3D....and wow. One of those movies you just have to see at the theatre. Well worth the 17 bucks.

Well I'm torn. The action sequences and CGI were beyond amazing but the middle of the movie (like a whole 45-60 minutes) was SUPER boring. The 3D was really cool but I found it to be a blurry movie at some points and I agree with dj_patm, some of the action sequences were blurry, albeit the end action sequence was near perfect.
I am sure the Blu-Ray version will make everything justified. I know this is the kind of movie where seeing in the theater is best, but the Blu-Ray will be better I think.
The story wasn't as bad as people say it is, but it is super simplistic.

Fern Valley meets Pocahontas meets the Mechwarrior videogames.
Awesome movie. Truly breathtaking. I was actually leaning forward in my seat for most of the movie. The comment about how the dreaming world seems more and more like the real world is particularly fitting.
So-called experts are going to be ranting about the script or the plot or any number of things because they simply can't turn off the inner critic and appreciate something that is beautiful. More than that though the movie is different. Not everything fits within your film studies 101 model.
Dialogue is great, but sometimes it detracts from the picture. In the case of Avatar, less is more. Would a voiceover have made the astounding vistas anymore astounding? They speak for themselves.
Great movie. I left the theatre thinking 'Wow'. Can you ask for anything more?

The thing with the story though is that it wasn't bad. It is just simplistic, but from what I can remember, there aren't many plot holes. Avatar isn't a movie your expecting an awesome script though, same goes for Transformers 2, but people all want to be smug buttholes and criticize anything just to be a dick.
