You fight back by improving productivity, not screwing your own consumers.

I'm not deeply involved with politics or economics, so take my take with a grain of salt. I think Trump is trying to bully into getting more leverage in an ultimate negotiation. He's coming out swinging to get more favourable terms, and in the long term bring jobs to the states. Having a weak PM isn't helpful here.
I hope Trudeau grows some balls in this press conference and comes out hard for the first time in his life.

We have nothing except power holdbacks on the west and Ontario areas.
But, fata me, our Owls are unreal. And our air quality slays the US air. Pieces of crap.

I was just discussing this exact thing with my friend group. Some Canadians calling them "dumbass" "stupid Americans". But yet we are on the ones on brink of collapse due to, well, lets just say it, poor management and future planning. Its actually quite insane.

Shouldn't we be filing a dispute under NAFTA's provision 20, I mean if Trump is making #### up as a justification for these Tarrifs, then it seems that there is a dispute mechanism in the NAFTA agreement.
Or how about filing for an injunction in the US courts, why isn't that possible, government's can sue governments.

If he came out swinging then he's in an 0-1 count with respect to American consumers.
Jobs are a dwindling need. Labor is going to be rendered almost completely useless eventually as automation becomes mastered.

If this goes on for more than a month, the Canadian economy will never recover. US consumers can't afford to pay even higher prices for vehicles. Trump is following through on his promise to bring jobs back to Wisconsin and Michigan though. All of those jobs that got sent to Ontario will go back to where they belong.

Hockey Canada should pull out of the four nations cup. F playing games on American soil. Does this do anything to solve this crisis? No. But I’m petty like that.

I just read that provision, and I was thinking this as well. Is there not a way to at least put a temporary halt on the tariffs and bring the U.S. to the negotiating table through a mediator or something? And yes, I realize it's pretty much impossible to negotiate with a narcissistic lunatic like Trump. But there must be something we can try?

Trudeau is talking alright here by quoting JFK and talking to the American people about the help they provided. But I can see this quickly going on a MacLean drivel speech.

Trudeau announcing counter-tariffs. Bad move. He's playing with fire against a madman. Trump is going to crush us like a bug.
