Glad we’ve gone from it being disrespectful to slap the puck in the net to it being disrespectful to put the puck in the net at all.

Toughest sport on earth.

The resulting brawl maybe, sure. But a slap shot into an empty net increased your entertainment value? Seriously? Comparing it to a fancy dunk in basketball is asinine.

You can argue all day long with the unwritten code about respect is stupid, but I don’t know how anyone makes the argument that this adds flavour and personality to hockey. It’s not a skill play. It’s not exciting. It’s something any crappy fourth liner could do.
I don't think anyone is saying the slapper itself is exciting, but more the concept of a player showing a bit of personality in a game which should be encouraged as more personality from the players can lead to more exciting games overall.

Same thing. If this is “personality” then we need to redefine personality. Nothing about this play was interesting except the fights afterwards.

I'm curious to know if they recorded the speed of his clapper.
Was it at Chara level or my beer league level.

If it was close to 100mph, I think the NHL just got a taste of a revamped hardest shot contest in next year's skills comp.

Breakaway clappers instead of immobile puck.

Don’t act like you don’t know how low the NHL has set the personality bar. The biggest star in the league has less personality than cardboard.

I do. I just don’t see how this moves the needle. If it’s such a nothing play, then it’s a nothing play. If it weren’t for the potential showboating angle that riles up the leafs, something a lot of people are claiming shouldn’t exist because the code is dumb, it wouldn’t even register as exciting at all. It’s not a skill play, it doesn’t endear the player to me because of their work ethic or play style. It’s just like cool that guy can shoot beer league velocity into an empty net from 8 feet.

A ‘code’ for how you should put the puck in a net.

####ing embarrassing.

This is like "the code" for clean hits requiring a sucker-punch response (ala Tkachuk and Caveboy). The angry idiot always looks like such a fool. It's like some asshat at a bar assaulting you because you happened to talk to "his girl". Just the epitome of insecurity.

It is absolutely the showboating angle. The fact that Reilly handled it so poorly is irrelevant. Even if there was no follow-up by the Leafs at all it was funny to see a player pour salt in the wound of the their rivals. Their follow-up made it even funnier. I like players showing personality and if you don't want a team rubbing your face in it then don't lose.

It would have been talked about as lame and classless if the Leafs had just shook their heads and made fun of him later in the media. Instead, Reilly spazzed and made Grieg look like a next level troll, which is exactly what he was trying to do.

Imagine if he shanked it and missed. He'd be on Top 10 worst lists forever and no one would have sympathized or held back their laughter. Now it's Reilly that looks like the plug.

Going in circles now. If it’s showboating then a response is justified, but it wasn’t so a response is stupid. And if this is personality, then we need to redefine personality because this is lame AF.

It’s either showboating or it’s a nothing play. But there’s no scenario where this adds anything to the enjoyment of the product.

No we're not going in circles we just disagree, and that's fine. It is showboating and I don't think showboating means a response is justified. I also don't think it's lame AF. And it added to mine and others enjoyment of the game. You don't get to dictate what others find funny or enjoyable.

Or maybe he just did it for his own entertainment and no one else’s.
