5 more years would be atrocious. Treliving would have it done already. Conroy seems to be playing a bit of harball of his own. I like it.

Exactly. Another way to look at this is that with big money attached to a handful of these older players, it also ensures a massive infusion of youth with each passing year, since there will be less cap room to work with. If younger players force management to make difficult decisions because of their increasing quality of play, that can be a good problem to have.

Also, if there is a rebuild in a few years, you still need to hit the cap floor. And you need vets to show the young guys how to be a pro.
I just don't see the angst over having a few contracts for veteran guys.

Also, that’s captain material right there.

This has to mean that Backlund will be signed before the end of camp, right? Players don't talk about other players's contracts like that.

With how his teammates are talking about him, I think it's a slamdunk.
Conroy needs to extend Backlund if he's really trying to compete with this roster as is. The team itself is pretty openly electing their Captain - and the guy is still playing a very good level.
My guess? 3 Years, $6M AAV and the Captaincy. Flames will bank on Backlund being our Pavelski.
Question - if Backlund signs the extension now, is it still considered a 35+ contract? It will kick in when he's 35, and with that the Flames could heavily structure the deal on bonuses to allow for some cap flexibility going forward, no?

^I think if it was a 'slamdunk', it would be done by now.
And 3x6M AAV is crazy for a 35-38yo. He's great, but he's no Pavelski.
But sounds like things are pointing towards they will get something figured out.

I get annoyed when people say this, because there are dozens of things which could be in play, even if it is l virtually certain that Backlund's contract is all but a formality at this stage.

Treliving said the same thing about Johnny's extension and look at him now.

How is it any crazier than giving a player $7M until they're 39? Or $10.5M until they're 38? This is smarter in my eyes, because we know Backlund is still effective and it's not crazy to think he could maintain 3rd line quality minutes for the next 3 years beyond this one.
We know Backlund is still executing. Pavelski got a 3 year, $7M AAV at 35 - and he just signed a 1 year $5.5M AAV deal after that one wrapped up.
Sure, Backlund doesn't produce offensively like Pavelski, but $6M starting next year is not the same $7M from 3 years ago.

Conroy would have to be drunk to give Backlund 3x6.

Danault makes 5.5. I don’t understand how anyone expects Backlund to be under $5.

He’s 30 and signed that deal when he was 28/29 the same way the current Backlund deal was done.
You don't overpay 3rd line players that's how you screw up the cap structure of the team.
We finally ended the Troy Brower cycle with Lucic off the books.
We also have Lindholm to extend. Hanifin is a possibility now as well.

I don't see a 3 x $6M. If Backlund's goal is really to win a cup, or compete for one that won't be the contract he's signing. I think it will be in the $3.5M - $4.5M range on a 3 year deal.

Backlund put up 56 points last season.
He's not going to sign a sub-$5M contract. I just don't see it. He's worth $5M+ today, so any expectation of him signing below that is just fans hoping for a hometown discounts...and those just really don't happen very often, and it's never really happened in Calgary.

You’re furthering my point. 2 years ago the cap was what again? What it going to be next year, and the next.

By the sounds of it the cap won't explode like we think it will.
Backlund most likely isn't putting up career numbers going forward.
We also have to look at the younger players and how these contacts are being done around the league.
A guy like Coronato pops this year suddenly we are talking 8 year extension next summer for him in a 7-8 range.
Mangiapane and Wolf.
Someone is getting squeezed out and I would rather spend our dollars on the young core.

Having an opinion on what direction the team should go is fine. But he’s going to be over $5 wherever he signs. I don’t see an argument against it.
