Question on a rebuild... Can they retain salary on a multi year contract (ie Kadri) for only part of it... So retain 50% the first 2 years after that no retention? Can they do variable retention 50% year 1 than 25% for 3 than nothing? Or do they have to retain same amount every year for the duration of the contract?

No, the percentage is set across the duration of the contract.

Hard to be a Flames fan these days. Even if we get good draft picks in return for all these players, it is hard to see why those draft picks would stick around once they've developed. I fear we've turned into a developmental squad for American NHL teams.

No, the new arena will be online by the time these guys get to the NHL full time. At worst they spend their ELC in the Dome before moving over.

Steinberg was talking about a retool or speeding up a rebuild on Flames Talk and I just dont get it. We haven't even started the rebuild and we are already looking to fast track it.

Making deals for Hamonic and signing players like Brouwer is exactly why this team was inconsistent and couldn't win more than one round during the Gaudreau era.

We shouldn't be looking to fast track this.

Probably the only acceptable option for ownership if they go down this road. Timing it to the new arena opening up.

It worries me when guys like Steinberg and Wills start talking like this, because they've served as a mouthpiece for the organization for a while now. I hope they're not looking at this situation as a quick re-tool with their typical Flames half measures and rush jobs. The need for a full on rebuild couldn't be more obvious if it burst through the Saddledome roof riding a unicorn.

Max is 50%. Another team could then retain up to 50% but won’t happen in the offseason

A mess that should be easier to clean up with all these free agents that want out. Good players that don't gel. Everyone tells us that Huberdeau will bounce back and the Coach loves everyone and everything so it should be Roses.

Retain only 3 contracts up to 50% each

I believe you can retain a contract more than 50% ONLY if another team takes on an additional 50% after the original 50% retention. Only has happened s couple of times and at the TDL.
