Court documents also state that Lochridge learned that the manufacturers of the Titan’s forward viewport only certified it to a depth of 1,300 metres. The Titanic wreck lies 3,800 metres below the ocean surface.
There’s yer problem!
I guess when you get wealthy enough, you just figure you’re invulnerable.
Somewhat ironic they wind up this way when they were looking to get kicks out of spending vast sums of money visiting a mass grave of mostly poor immigrants.
Did the Titanic fascinate people this much before the movie came out? Like, I know it was always a cultural reference…but was it more of a trivial factoid?

The thing about NASA is space is easy relative to this. Only 100 kpa external pressure. Here you have 40000 Kpa of pressure. 400 times more force trying to crush it.

Crews searching for the Titan submersible heard banging sounds every 30 minutes Tuesday, according to an internal government memo update on the search.
Four hours later, after additional sonar devices were deployed, banging was still heard, the memo said. It was unclear when the banging was heard Tuesday or for how long, based on the memo.
A subsequent update sent Tuesday night suggested more sounds were heard, though it was not described as “banging.”

I think it was just a cultural reference until Ballard found it and the subsequent write up and photos in National Geographic.

Yes. I spent my entire childhood learning everything I could about Titanic. There was a t.v special dedicated to it, I got Ballard's books on it, family tried to plan a trip to woods hole but Alvin was always away when they tried.
My mom took me to see Titanic when it came put in the theaters. I balled my eyes out as she left Port. Couldn't have cared less about the plot. Then I awed and gasped during the sinking sequence.
Yeah, Titanic was a big deal before the movie came out.

It was a big deal for 12 yo me when the movie came out because it had probably the biggest boobs id ever seen (by virtue of being on the silver screen)

And if you're fascinated by the Titanic, the exhibit at the Luxor in Vegas is second to none. I highly recommend it, and you get to see 'The Big Piece.'

You also have the vacuum of space which is cold but not a long term corrosive nightmare and a conductor like sea water. Also in space you have space so you aren’t going to hit random stuff on the titanic.
This is a significantly more challenging environment.
Would you say the forces are unfathomable?
But let's not forget... our friends in the orbital industry may only have 1 atm of static pressure differential to handle but they do have to deal with at least 7.5 km/s of orbital kinetic energy (if they ever want to stop being in space). The reentry phase has caused at least 8 deaths I can think of out of only a few hundred people launched. How does that compare to deaths per person-dive below (say) 3000 meters? I'll probably go look that up now...

Halifax is also a great place to visit for Titanic history. The maritime museum has a few pieces in its exhibit, and of course the cemetery were some recovered bodies were put to rest.

It was a big thing before the movie for me, too. I was even able take a school trip to Woods Hole for one of the Alvin dives. It was pretty amazing.
The U.S. coast guard has confirmed that searchers had located sounds coming from below the surface and that they have changed the focus for the ROV operations because of it, so they must feel that it is a solid lead. So far negative results though.

The submarine company CEO is named Stockton Rush? That name almost gives Hank Scorpio a run for its money. Why would you ever get in a submarine built by a guy with as villainous a name as Stockton Rush?
