Have to think Tanguay got some major points after the WHC for the position of HC. That's how Peter's was brought in.

Maybe, but a short unequal tournament like that seems like thin evidence for hiuring an NHL coach. Especially for an assistant coach.

Wasn't Peters more about Treliving's long talks with him at the 2016 tourney, as opposed to an on-ice result anyway (where he had a team with Hall, McDavid, Stone, Marchand, Perry, ROR, Scheifele, etc)?

Oddly enough Canada finished 4th in 2018 in his last HC gig there (right after he was hired by the Flames).

If Conny was the GM back then, Peters wouldn't have been hired by the Flames because no one can out talk Conny.

Maybe some people just prefer blondes or redheads.

I don’t know if Tanguay would be the right choice or not, but it would be exciting to me if it happened. The guy knew offensive creativity and adapted his game to be a good hard working two-way player. There is no doubt to me that he has the potential to be a good head coach. He always seemed like a really smart player to me and the type that could be a coach.

I don’t know how much head coaching experience you need when you’ve been a high level player your whole career. Certainly he picked up a lot of things along the way.

And Huberdeau will have a 100 pt season without a single shot on net

I think players would listen to Tanguay. Won cups. Played in Calgary. Been elite.

I'm hoping Tanguay! He was awesome as a player, he should be good for Huby

If we are going first time NHL head coach I am all for Tanguay. Unlike the other two first time candidates his system should be more offensive and creative which is what this roster needs.

I chuckle at the thought if Tanguay is the HC, while all the fans screaming at Huby " shoot....shoot...SHOOT!!!" and Tanguay is screaming under his breathe "pass...pass...pass..."

He's a bit of an unknown as he doesn't have much experience outside of guiding Quenneville's team for a large portion of a regular season and then getting totally outcoached in the playoffs. If the work he did behind the Panthers bench was really that impressive the people closest to him (Panthers management) certainly didn't see it.

Have we seen a correlation between highly skilled players becoming good coaches or being able to take their skill and transfer to their team playing a highly offensive game?

Not really. A lot of skilled players were flops as coaches. Gretzky is the prime example. But there have been others. And these days most highly skilled players are so rich they just retire from the game.

And the centre of the big offensive line on the great Habs teams of the 70s was the biggest defensive minded coach maybe in the history of the NHL.

Phil Housley I suppose was the latest example of an elite skilled player that got a head coach gig in the NHL. It didn't work out great but it's hard to say how much of that was him and how much was the mess that was the Sabres.

Martin St.Louis... but it's too early to tell how good/bad he is.

Montreal have been terrible under him so far and they certainly haven't been a good offensive team playing with skill.

If there is one thing that I have learned over the past year, it is that the people running the Panthers know what they are doing.

They knew to cut bait on Huberdeau, they knew Tkachuk had another level.

If they passed on Brunette, Flames should too.
