Dave Nonis drafted William Nylander, who the Flames should absolutely, positively, 100% trade for this summer.

I can't exclaim properly how much my mood about the Flames has sifted towards happiness and excitement over the course of today from yesterday. I'm pumped about all I'm reading about Conny and going to bat for players like Gaudreau or Phillips or Razz or Shilly. The 2023 draft is going to be a banger!

My wife will be happy.
I remember during the 04 run, watching the game while my wife was reading. She looked up from her book and said, “who’s that” with a little bit more enthusiasm than she otherwise shows for hockey.
“That’s Craig Conroy honey. Why”
“No reason”.

Steinberg, on Flames talk just now, said that Conroy’s approach will put a heavy emphasis on building through the draft.
I’d say that excludes us from deficit spending.

No need for deficit spending. Tre is going to Toronto.
I smell a blockbuster ... Hanifin and Dube for Willy and Liljegren.

Thank goodness.
Stockpile picks for once, and not just for a year or two.
Do it all the time and unless your amateur scouting and development is the ####s, you will always have a solid prospect pool to fill your roster out with and will very likely hit on the odd gem that will be a star at the top end of the roster.
Then you won't have to build such a high percentage of your team through free agency, which rarely works. (if ever??)

Thats just more than "never" works out.
Agreed it can be a tough transition, but far from impossible.

Steinburg was in total spin mode. It was palpable but entirely understandable as well.
This may or may not work out. No one knows.
IMO it was time for a whole new, unassociated to the last decade, set of eyes and thoughts to change direction. This is not that.
I do agree though he is going to inject some enthusiasm and vigor into the franchise at the very least. At least into the front office and coaching staff whoever that turns out to be.
Again though, he will be the 9th GM in Flames history (if you dont include Maloney) and it will be the 8th time the guy taking the chair has never done it before. Just saying.

And the one guy who had done it before was Jay Feaster.
You know who else was never an NHL GM before their current job? Bill Zito, Jim Nill, and Kelly McCrimmon. In fact, the overwhelming majority of NHL GMs are in the role for the first time.

Probably can't get a better person to do the job. Whether that translates to being a good GM remains to be seen, exciting to see! I wonder if he makes immediately a splash trade, to put his own stamp on the team.
