Sorry, your statement “ without losing them on waivers” made me think otherwise.

8%. Laughable.
This is what draft and develop and asset management is for you?
No argument on Ruzicka. Can’t get back into the lineup though.
No argument on Duehr. Good future.
Pelletier…being touted as a future captain. 23 games. At the end of the season. Should have been up way earlier.
Gilbert. 21 games. 3rd nhl team. 26 years old.
Mackey. Signed as free agent. 26. valimaki was put on waivers for his 10 games and then traded him.
Phillips. 3 career games. 2 in the final year of his contract. We spent 5 (!) years developing him. Surely he showed enough promise that flames kept him around and invested in him.
Desimone. He’s 28. Free agent signing.
Zahorna. 26 year old waiver wire pickup. Since traded for an ahl player.
Half of your list is 26 or older. Is that draft and develop?
I’m not that fussed about Phillips on a personal level but on a franchise level, it’s terrible.
I don’t believe any on your list make greater than $1 million. In a capped league, you have to get cheaper players onto the team. That’s usually entry level contracts but it’s value for salary cost that matters.
I think that this is probably average in the nhl? Maybe a bit high? Maybe a bit low? And…currently a non playoff team, halfway in the standings…more or less average. Probably a bit below.
Can you honestly say that your list above shows the flames as moving forward?
|
8% of the entire roster for the year is actually fairly significant - can you tell us what the league average is?
And can you honestly say that the list above shows the Flames are NOT moving forward?

Agreed, 8% seems like a decent amount. I’ve never thought from the perspective of that specific metric before. But once you get up to 20%, that’s essentially on average one rookie on the ice at all times. There aren’t many successful teams that come to mind with that roster construction.
The other condition to giving young players ice-time is the quality of the prospects. Some have been exceptional in bursts, but m not sure that any of them would have demanded an 82-game look from other NHL teams.

On this one. On what basis should he have been up earlier.
He didn't have a good camp.
He went down and played well and earned a recall.
He's got 7 points in 23 games.
He's been good but that doesn't scream "OMG HOW DID WE NOT HAVE THIS KID UP EARLIER!!!!"

Are there any college free agents available that look good?

Jake Livingstone looks like a solid D prospect/player with Minnesota state

Sutter was asked at length about bringing Coronato into the fold, and about how big a jump it is going from being a sophomore in college to the NHL. I wouldn't expect him to play anytime soon.

I think Coronato gets similar treatment to Pelletier when he came up. Practice for 2 weeks and then get into some games, but I can see him getting into the Sunday game

Coronato gets into one of the final handful of games, then starts next year with the Wranglers..
No big surprise.

I think the approach is solid and has a lot of merit. Look how fast things can go south even with a fairly recent example like Sven. Don’t need to put that kind of pressure on the kid. He’ll get his chance but nothing wrong doing it in a responsible and logical way.

I think it makes sense for him to get into a game (or a few) near the end. Lots for him to absorb just by being here.

Sorry if this has already been asked but would Coronato be eligible to play for the wranglers? That’d be a nice add for their post season.

I feel like the only way Ownership gets on board with building through the draft is if Sutter recommends it.

The ideal situation for me is that Treliving gets re-signed, and he and Darryl announce a rebuild this summer.
No upheaval. GM and Coach in-step together working towards a common goal. That would be ideal, as stability + shared vision at two massively important positions would be something this organization has lacked.
We’ve seen the lack of a shared vision in recent years through the use of Sam Bennett. Treliving and Conroy were both on the record as viewing Benny as a centre, but their coaches did not.
Sutter seemed to like Bennett, but by the time he came on Benny had already requested a trade - and once that happens, the relationship between player and team rarely stays strong and Tree then dealt him.
Now, this season certainly makes me question whether Coach and GM are on the same page…but if they’re both onboard with a rebuild? That’d be exciting.
