I'm sorry, but this to me just highlights every negative thought I have ever had about Gaudreau's intensity, his desire to win, his loyalty, every aspect of his character, and I thought Darryl's coaching had kind of re-kindled, revitalized some of it. Apparently not. He wanted out, screwed the team over by pretending otherwise. Hope he hates it in Colombus.
Never his biggest fan, but this is really a sour-taste type of goodbye.

How anyone can think treliving or the flames or basically anyone else besides Johnny and his agent played themselves in this situation is beyond me

The team that missed the playoffs by 19 points last year and 16 the year before might only miss by 5 this time!

Clearly Gaudreau was willing to take less money for the once in a lifetime chance to play for Head Coach << checks notes >> Brad Larsen.
Okay.

This just smacks of an emotional - rather than rational - decision on Johnny's part, likely due to feeling his bridge with Calgary was burned, and the grass on the other side wasn't as green as it looked from Cowtown.
Columbus? Maybe his wife has a college buddy there or something...

Good for Johnny I guess but this makes me really frustrated and disappointed as a Flames fan. I could stomach it a bit better if he went to a NE US team as was anticipated but Columbus with that deal is just a kick to the junk.

What an absolutely terrible decision by Johnny Gaudreau. His agent should be absolutely embarrassed.
In nearly 20 years since joining the NHL, Columbus has been consistently one of the worst franchises in the whole league. And he is going there for less money. It is several hours drive from southern NJ.
Teams make a lot of terrible decisions on free agency, but I would call this the worst decision ever made by a player.

Columbus isn’t even a good team. Was the Devils offer confirmed?? Imo made way more sense to go there.

Agents messed this up.
Don't think CBJ was ever in the conversation.
Now he panics yesterday to make a decision (I don't think he really wanted to leave the team but family pressure and 7y commitment) to go, hoping a NYI or NJ or PHI can make something work today.
Then CBJ comes out of the rafters today, and he panics again and takes it like it's a ticking time bomb.
Rush decision IMO, miscalculated from his agent these past weeks and months and years to paint him into a corner.
Poor look all around.

Of course. You can always blame Brad for anything. Except it helps if you call him Bradley, because apparently that's a burn or something.

I'm really curious what the back story is here? What turned Gaudreau off from Calgary so strongly? Was it the climate? The city? The people? Something with the team? There has to be something here that motivated this that we are unaware of?

Flames stuff aside Jarmo Kekalainen is kind of a fun GM.

Things started to move fast once Philly folded their cards. Maybe NJ and NYI were just bluffing.

Maybe that is what Brad should have done. Sign Gudbranson for 3.3M per year and tell Johnny he could play with him at 10.5M. Math

The smart move would have been to negotiate an 8x10 deal with the Flames with an extremely limited trade clause - Philly and NJ and stipulate that if he was ever unhappy, he would be able to request a trade that was honored.
He'd still be on his highest +/- line of the last decades and doing good work under Sutter and be able get out of things went south.
Instead ... he's marooned himself in Ohio and mediocrity. Good luck.
