He only had 88 shots on goal in 82 gp. Lowest by a pretty fair margin among full time players, especially given his TOI.

He just needs to be able to fire a crisp pass - if the situation dictates he can thread a 'pass' into traffic looking for a deflection

The flames might as well start taking some Mike Smith style dives on those picks because McDavid is gone anyway, even if you don’t flop down.

I would say he's amongst the top 5 most important Flames. His loss is massive.
Who is more important?
Johnny
Markstrom

That's it. That's the list from my POV.

As others have pointed it out, it's not just what Tanev does himself. He clearly makes who is is partnered with more effective which then allows Zadarov/Gudbransson to slot properly.

His loss is huge for this team. When teams lose REALLY important players it impacts them.

Tanev's impact extends to Kylington's effectiveness as well. Kylington could go on his adventures and contribute, while Tanev could back him up. So not only are you out Tanev, but Kylington is probably only 50% effective now.

Not only has is Tanev extremely important, but him being as important as is he doesn’t show us the team needs “a lot of work,” it shows us nearly the opposite, that the team needs a very small piece of work: add another top 4 d that can do what Tanev can do for when Tanev can’t.

He's a coaster without the puck. He'll only backcheck if the guy with the puck is RIGHT THERE, otherwise, he conserves his energy. Anyone can play 30 mins a night like that.

He was the #1 defensive defenseman in the league last year and #4 this year based on JFresh analysis. So I don't agree. We're missing a superstar level impact player who does a decent job matching up against the best player in the world. There is nobody else on this team even close to being able to shut down McDavid

And the Tanev/McDavid matchup:

He's a cherry picker for sure. Johnny sometimes does this in case Chucky can toss one to him, but Johnny also takes care of the defensive side of his responsibilities first.

That may be true about him coasting, but let’s not kid ourselves, not very many players could do what he does 30 min a night. Without him, we sweep this series.

I agree with VilleN. I'd posit that LA would have swept Edmonton without McDavid.

Gee, wonder what it took for McDavid to think, hey maybe after 7 years and multiple playoff failures I should help out and play in both ends of the rink?

Too bad he just woke up now. Until he wins a cup he's not in ANY conversation.

I’d argue he still is not defensively sound.
Game 1 for instance he was on for 4 or 5 goals against.

He floats and he’s good at it but his back checking is embarrassingly bad.

The trick is to make his line play in the defensive zone for sustained pressure. During the last game, that line was getting too many easy exits.

No hitting Tanev because he's hurt...that's the rules for Drai right?

Or you need one of the young D to take another step in the D zone.

Tanev is not only an elite defensive D man, his play also triggers Kylington to be better, and takes pressure off Andersson and Hanifin, so they can produce more.
