I would gladly sacrifice Backlund for Giordano. 3rd line centre vs. our top defender, both in decline but Gio is better at his job than Backlund is at his and Backlund’s contract is a good deal worse.

This suggestion won't go over well, but since Vegas doesn't have to give anyone up to Seattle, they might be a good destination for a trade.

This would be ideal imo. Then if Gio wants to return next year as a depth D on a cheap deal we can do that and we clear a bunch of cap.

The other piece to what Treliving might be doing is the hockey deal.
Ottawa would have no problem taking on a player like Hanifin into their protection list.
So who or what would you take from Ottawa for Hanifin?
The player has to be somebody that does not need to be protected in the draft.
Does a Josh Norris fit the bill?

I hate to say it but I think this might be it for Gio on the Flames

Moving Hanifin would be a bad mistake.

That's a good cheap flexible option for a team.

Not on a playoff team There are not a lot of teams where Gio makes their expansion protected list. Not even the Flames.
He had one year in his career that he was in the Thornton/Chara class and was a Fail in that years playoffs. Chara 200 playoff games Thornton 186 playoff games.. These guys got to choose
Thornton age 38 1 year 8M
age 39 1 year 5M
age 40 1 year 2M
age 41 1 year 700K
age 42 UFA not yet signed
Chara
age 41 1 year 5M plus 1.75 Performance bonus 1.25 was for playing 10 gms
age 42 1 year 2M plus 1.75 Performance bonus 1.25 was for playing 10 gms
age 43 1 year 795K plus 230K for 10 gms and $250K for playoffs and missed the 250k bonus for winning SC

From Seravelli:
No final decision has been made, but all signs point to the Calgary Flames leaving captain#Mark Giordano#unprotected when lists are due for the Expansion Draft on Saturday. Conversations about the possibility have been ongoing between the Flames and Giordano for a year now, so if it does indeed come to pass, there will be no surprise. Calgary does not plan to entice Seattle with assets to select Giordano. However, if Giordano is chosen, that would free up $6.75 million in cap flexibility for the Flames, who are ready to make a significant change.

Is Cody Glass worth taking a shot on?
Glass has disappointed Vegas as a prospect, but a change of scenery and an opportunity might help.
Vegas could lose Martinez without issue if they trade for Hanifin.
Cody Glass and Peyton Krebs?
Vegas would probably want to play hardball with teams so you wont get full value.
What is the difference in value compared to losing Giordano or giving up something to Seattle?

By most metrics Backlund isn't a 3rd line centre.

I would do this as you keep Lindholm as 1st line center and shift Monahan to 2nd line center but you would need a contingency plan to replace both Ryan and Backlund in your bottom 6.

6.75 can help make this team much deeper. With a higher quality of depth, especially up front.
It could afford tree to skip the dumpster diving and really put together a competitive bottom 6 forward crew.

I don't see how picking Gio makes sense for Seattle. $6.75M in cap space alone has a ton of value. IMO they'll get more value out of offering that to a contender in cap hell than they will out of picking Gio. I think they're bluffing, and the right play here is to leave him unprotected and don't pay anything.

Something we agree on. Flames absolutely should not move any other D man besides letting Gio go in expansion.
Gio has been a stellar player and Captain for CGY but his window has closed.

I'm completely fine with you ignoring all on ice stats and just counting playoff games to make your decisions.
I'm just not going to join you.
Last two years ...
26th CF%
32nd in CA60
41st in SA60
35th in xGF%
29th in xGA60
62nd in HDCF%
39th in HDCA60
31 teams ... the math isn't tough that's 1,1,2,2,1,2,1 for average in terms of defenseman.
The data just doesn't support your odd take.

So to bring balance to the site should I completely over react to this report and call Treliving a genius and suggest his contract should be extended?

Seravalli comes in and re aligns my beliefs about what the Flames should be doing. Backing away from the ledge.
