Fair. I don't know if it was a bad thing to consider what they say, but I have doubts that he's giving the impression that the players have the power. He must've seen bad signs behind the scenes to do it. As for keeping Ward, it was probably at the back of his mind anyway. I don't think open communication is a bad thing, I just don't think he would do it in giving choice. I think he simply made bad decisions.
I think some people have exaggerated his asking players what they thought. The Hartley one was standard exit interviews at the end of the season IIRC.
